I think you need the playoffs to keep the season alive for most teams otherwise the last couple of months will pretty much be pointless for most and that would hit attendances.

Best and fair solution (similar to what another poster suggested) i think is

1st - Automatic
2nd - Automatic
3rd - Final of Playoff
4th - Semi Final (2 leg) Winner plays 3rd in the Final
5th & 6th play each other over 2 legs to play 4th in the Semi

Also i think the Final should not be played at Wembley. Most playoff Finals will not attract any more than 30000, Play at a prem club 30k - 40k capacity and keep some atmosphere.
