I'd imagine that if he's confident in his own ability then a 1 year is the better option for him rather being tied down for 2 years on first year pro wages. If he can establish himself he'll be holding all the cards when it comes to negotiating a new contract.
Perhaps that's why it took so long to sign, maybe we wanted to tie him down for longer on a lower wage and his agent thought he'd be better off with a 1 year deal.
