IMHO that demands a change in the way that the rules are applied, along the lines expressed by the commentator. When the ref is unsighted, other officials should advise, but not adjudicate.
They do only advise now. Once the they have told the ref what's happened it's upto the ref what he card is issued. They can suggest a red or yellow card but ultimately the red makes the decision.
