There's a well-know saying that every business is either moving forward or it is moving backwards (relative to its competitors) and it can never stand still. Whether we like it or not, our competitors are continually trying to up their game, whether that's by strengthening their squads, or by improving fitness levels, or by developing new tactics.

Doing the same old things, game after game, is - as pagl said - a sign of madness. For one thing, we are being watched by our opponents, who learn to overcome our tactics unless we vary them, i.e. we are 'found-out.' So we must do the same to them. We have to adopt new techniques - different set-pieces, formations and so on. We must constantly improve areas in which we have weaknesses - delivering balls into areas that hurt our opponents, particularly to our 'goalscorers.' We have to learn to keep the ball - especially when we're defending a one goal lead, and not to give it away. They can't score if they don't have the ball, and neither can we if they have it.

Every team that we play has strengths and weaknesses. We have to know what they are, and exploit them. They will change their formations and techniques during games to try and exploit us, and we must react to those changes. When we simply carry on as before, it plays into their hands: they know what we will do next and prevent us if they can. We must do the same to them.

There's no room for coaches who just say 'keep on doing what you've been doing, and you'll break them down' (i.e. in the second half.)

None of that means 'fiddling around with things' until we get it right. It means adopting a strategy for every game and for every situation.

If we don't change, our opponents will, and they will definitely want to change for the better. Woe betide us if we don't at least match them.
Do we have the coaches to do that as does appear from the outside that we have old school coaches at the helm with Darlington and his defensive approach alongside.
