Default Re: January window signings

January is always difficult to sign players. Even more so when you have a new manager who doesn't really want to be there, with no real philosophy to recruit to. It's akin to giving a blind man a dart and asking him to throw it at the dart board.

We won't ever be able to compete financially in this league, with sugar daddy clubs everywhere. So the better players, most likely won't end up here. Which means we need to ensure we have a system for the "average player" to flourish in. This means choosing physical attributes over technical ones. I think a gegenpressing style would work wonders in the lower leagues, and the beauty of that system is you don't need star players. Hard working, high stamina, pace and able to carry out the basics of the role they play. In fact, we likely already have the players here to carry out this system.

As an example, though we would need to switch it to the opposite side.

From this we could realistically look at playing:

GK -Lainton
Defensive full back - Kennedy/Roberts
Attacking full back - Jennings
Covering Defender - Pearson
Libero/Ball playing Defender - Lawlor
Midfield sweeper - Carrington/Young (Walker would be ideal - So a replacement here)
Midfield Runner - Wright
Second striker - Holroyd/Grant
Defensive Winger - Rutherford
Attacking Winger - McGleashan/Holroyd
Striker - Oswell

Lower league players very often lack composure and technique, and so pressing these players will force mistakes and so the press become the playmaker. Win the ball back high up the pitch and counter.

If we then take this system of play, we can then invest into data analysis/scouting etc and recruit players for the system. You would also need to take into account other attributes, their mentality etc. Essentially it's looking at the big picture and how we can take advantage of the environment we currently see ourselves in.
