This is fine if the player is so far down the pecking order they are unlikely to be needed for the fist team.
But is / was Thorn close enough to the first team ? and if he didn't go out on loan then he would probably vegetate with no game time - better for him to be playing and highly active.

Would say Doug Tharme is our best youth prospect but with signing Chambers then he went down the pecking order.......and was loaned out to AFC Telford United.

However, a couple of injuries or suspensions at the same time combined with the long term injury to Manny Smith and we would be struggling in central defence especially with the additional Scottish Cup competition and potential additional games - but I suppose it's a gamble - balancing the possibility of shortages against the desire to provide up and coming players with game time - there is always the emergency loan option if we hit a difficult patch and were suddenly struggling for players in specific positions.
