It is actually around 2,000 per year not 8,000. You know why it's so low? (although 2,000 lives is still too many) BECAUSE we have vaccines against the strain of flu that is out each year.
We have NO vaccine or defence against this strain of flu because it's new.
If we don't isolate people and use common sense it will be more like 2,000 per day dying.
This is the problem at the moment, people who just ignore it and state that it's all scaremongering.
