For me it was a time when TV, if you had one, was fuzzy black and white with 2 channels. The washing was rung out on a mangle. Collars could be starched at Soo Kens in Brook Street and chips were 3p a bag ! At Christmas you could bid for a Turkey or Goose at a feather auction off Queens St but you had to pluck it yourself.

As for football. Some of the team were part timers but were lions compared to the apologies that wear the shirt today. The club was run by volunteers who also ran their own businesses. They were not self publicists but and even then took some stick when the team didn't perform well. However some were a different class when it came to keeping the club on the straight and narrow.

As a young fan you might be lucky enough to have a rattle scarf and bobble hat but certainly no replica rip off shirts to tempt you ----Happy days eh! Oh, as for the chips ---- they could be bulked up with free scratching at Turners in Abbott Street.
