Famagusta is amazing. But be careful. The Turks have got a bit of a raw press out of all this. All the Cypriots I know (be they Turkish or Greek - I know both) consider themselves Cypriot first and Turk/Greek second. It has its own culture and heritage seperate from the two interfering countries. The Turkish Army invasion was a response to some dodgy political goings on from President Archbishop Makario who refused political recognition for the minority Turkish population. The Turkish then encouraged proper-turks to move their screwing things up totally and now we have a total stalemate but the Greek-Cypriot government of the 70s should take some serious blame.

A beautiful, beautiful place mind.

edit: there is also a really interesting story about Cypriot football relating to Famagusta but its a bit late now to go into it. Just look at the Cypriot League table for some clues to what I am getting at.

I have been to a similar place in France called Oradour-sur-Glane. It's a small village where all the inhabitants were rounded up and shot by the nazis with only a few people managing to escape. They were mistakenly accused of harbouring members of the French Resistance. The village has been left as it was as a memorial to all those that died... a very eerie place.

Theres a place in America that was abandoned due to an underground fire - was the inspiration for the Silent Hill games I think.

Theyve just built a road going around it

There is a place called Pripyat near Kyiv in Ukraine. It was affected by the Chernobyl accident and was evacuated. It is a seriously eerie place with newspapers scattered from the time of the evacuation. It hasn't been looted like other similar places. If ever you go to Kyiv, try to go on an organised tour of the place (its the only way), but is well worth it.
Once on holiday in Kibris, the beach that has been cordened off and patrolled by the military (both Turkish and UN) by the old town of Gazimagusa -Famagusta, a local lad was telling me once that their 'game' when young, was sneaking under the fence and looting stuff from the old abandoned buildings, hiding from the guard and Dogs. If they were spotted, they would have been shot!!............it beats scrumping from Rhosnesni lane any day!

Nicosia the capital of Cyprus is split in two with armed soldiers located on both the Cypriot and the Turkish side with a U.N. controlled area in the middle. no shot has been fired for over 25 years but its still quite strange. If anyone is going to Cyprus on holiday can i recommend a visit as its very interesting. You can actually go into the Turkish side of the city if you take your passport with you. We didn't actually go ourselves as we didn't realise that you could but something we definately want to do in the future.
After world war 2 the Turkish, Greek and Cyprus all signed a treaty to say that the island would remain Neutral and independant but this broke down as the cypriots favoured the Greek side and hence the invasion by the Turky due to the potential of the island joing Greece.
