They weren't that good in 1966 when they had home advantage and all matches played at Wembley.

The best sides usually win the World Cup although in recent memory France were better than Italy in 2006
I started watching the World Cup in 1990, in that time 5 nations (Brazil, France, Argentina, Germany, Italy) have won 7/8 of the tournaments and produced 14 out of 16 finalists. I find it strange that the World Cup has been dominated by so few nations, while the Euros is a lot more unpredictable.

Yes but they didn't beat any decent sides so you can't bracket them with Greece and Portugal.

World cup is a longer format. Shorter formats give more chance of an upset.

That's why a surprise winner of the FA Cup is far more likely than a surprise premier league winner.

Factor in that it's also harder for European teams to qualify for the World cup aswell. Some of the decent outside bets don't get there as they have to leave room for cannon fodder like Panama.

Fair play, Stefan Szymanski and Simon Kuper do some excellent work analysing football stats. Their books Why England Lose and Soccernomics are up there with the best football books I’ve read.

Also in the earlier years of the World Cup and I include 1966, FIFA were concerned that if the home country was knocked out early in the tournament, no one would watch the later matches, hence the favourable refereeing of the home teams.
