Re: The sad case of a founding members and player of Wrexham Football Club
Something which may not be known by many people is the popularity of the freemasons in Wrexham during the 19th Century, and the many different lodges which existed at the time that our club was founded. Most of our founding players and members were members of different lodges in the region, as were the landowners, traders and businesses who gave donations to the club.
On 7th July 1862, The Racecourse played host to a Jubilee by The Wrexham District of The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows in order to raise funds for widows and orphans, and was attended by an estimated 15,000 visitors. https://books.google.cat/books?id=SC...rexham&f=false Another of the events that our spiritual home has been used for in the past Last edited by eastsussexred; 26th June 2016 at 15.07:26.. |

Re: The sad case of a founding members and player of Wrexham Football Club
The land which Mcdonalds are now believed to be buying is part of a much older plot which was bought by a Mr Little from Liverpool for 1shilling and 10pence a yard in 1892. This is on the junction between Mold Road and Crispin Lane (where the charity shop is situated today). At that time, the same person also bought the garden which had originally been attached to the original Turf Tavern (now the Turf car park) for 3 shillings and 7 pence per yard.
The car park, has previously been a bowling green, but in the early (horseracing) days of The Racecourse, there were 2 temporary stands erected and dismantled after the October race meetings each year; one next to the Turf Tavern garden, towards the junction between Mold Road and Crispin Lane, and the other, at the opposite side of the Turf Tavern, on Mold Road (where The MRS is today). Also in the vacinity, there were originally 2 buildings opposite where the old turnstiles are, for the kop on Crispin Lane;- Crispin Cottage, on the opposite side of Crispin Lane (where the railway line is today) and a vicarage, somewhere in the region of the ticket office platform for the station. It appears that the cottage remained in place, dissected by railway lines until the 1870's and the vicarage was demolished later. The railings to the railway embankment were erected in 1869 and navvies then later cut through the embankment for the bridge to be built over the railway line on Mold Road in 1887. On the Racecourse side of Crispin Lane, near the kop, military buildings had been erected, including an armoury and a building which would serve as the headquarters of the Volunteer Force of The Royal Welch Fusileers, from around the end of 19th Century, although these buildings probably originated from the earlier mess halls and arms-houses of the Wrexham Yeomanry Cavalry- formed in 1795 and later to be ammalgimated into The Denbighshire Hussars, and the Wrexham Volunteer Rifle Miltia, which were formed into two companies in 1860, from an earlier volunteer force. The rifle miltia was ammalgamated into The Royal Welch Fusileers in 1880. After the Wynn family estate refused to sell the war office a 99 year lease on The Racecourse in 1873, a new barracks was buiilt for the regular Fusileers at Hightown, completed in 1877, while the volunteer force of Fusliers retained its headquarters at the Crispin Lane side of The Racecourse into the 20th Century. Re: The sad case of a founding members and player of Wrexham Football Club
The original grandstand on Mold Road, built in 1854, was demolished during World War 1 and horseracing at The Racecourse was finally stopped in 1914. The races had initially been stopped in 1857 due to crowd trouble, but were gradually reintroduced, until road improvements in 1913 encroached onto the course at the turn out of the straight near to The Turf Hotel, where the finishing post had been situated.

The club then set up a fund to buy new equipment, repair damage and amend the alterations that had been made during the war.
