Re: Nine Acre "Legends"
DL Roberts, terrific athlete, scored some amazing tries including one on Park Avenue where he got the ball on the left wing and scored in the right hand corner, speedy right winger in football team but not very keen on tackling. That did not matter as there were others in the team who liked tackling and anything that went with it.
Owen Edwards was I think the most capped amateur footballer in Wales. |

Re: Nine Acre "Legends"
As an 11 year old in 1960 I remember using the field .it was state of the art in those days and we couldn't believe our luck with wide open spaces and excellent changing facilities.only downside was the Rugby teacher. Whose idea of fun was to give the ball to an unsuspecting child and then tackle him from behind. now Max Freudmann was a different character and a real gentleman. I seem to remember 120+ of us being caned by Harris and Major in GP about a year later and that was when the welsh international was ,I believe , asked to leave and he turned pro with Leigh! As for DL an interesting character and ,if my memory serves me he ran the best time for the old 100 yards in GB in 1966 or7. It is a very central site and if there was also some community use it would be a wonderful facility for the whole town, but I guess it needs some cash spending on it.

Re: Nine Acre "Legends"
We must have been there at the same time. I'm sure Harris caned every pupil on the school yard that day. Although it was raining he deemed it wasn't raining hard enough to let the lads into the building. The assembled students then rushed the prefects on duty only to find Harris waiting for them. He then lined up every student and caned for them for disobedience.

Re: Nine Acre "Legends"
I must of been in GP the same time as Griff49 and Kiddy Dragon as I was one of the 120+ caned that day
I had Danny Harris for 3 years. He was in GP for the bad winter of 1962/63 as one day he decided to have a kit inspection. Half the pupils had only brought there PT kits as there was 2ft of snow covering the Nine Acre. Danny went ballistic and said "It was up to him to decide if we played rugby" He then ordered up to the Nine Acre, were we played in 2ft of snow, half the pupils in just t-shirts and pumps. Danny was shouting orders to do more tackling After about 10 minutes, and most of us turning blue, he said we could go for a shower. He hadn't realised the water in our changing rooms had frozen, so we had to walk across to the other changing rooms naked to be showered in cold water. Not surprised he was asked to leave. |
