So someone on FB who I think works at the club in some capacity says it's not to do with money. Possibility of a coaching role somewhere?

Also if we really can't offer a deal attractive enough to keep players like Penn then that is a bug concern

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to write.
Better players may be out there but it's starting to really look like we can't compete anymore. Will have to wait to see who comes in but if it's bargain basement crap like it was last year then the writing will be on the wall.
Fact is Penn was Keates' signing and he wanted him to stay but couldn't keep hold of him.
And if the players that come in do seem underwhelming please nobody say 'wait till they play first' like they did last year as we really didn't need to see last years dross play to know they weren't going to be very good. They level they have played at in the past is a good indication of how good they are.

Spot on. Nice player but very slow..

Was he worth a 2 year contract? No....end of.

For me Disley a far better shout. Scores goals gets stuck in more and gets about the pitch more and according to Les he is still pretty much up to it.

At this level a lot is to do with location.
If he's had a similar offer closer to home then he will take it.

As for player retention how many of last seasons players would you want to retain if you wanted a promotion chasing team?

Judge Keates on the players he signs for next season.

I'll wait to see who he's signed for before sticking the knife in.

This could solve a huge issue , I think we will sign Disley but both couldn't play together in midfield.Disley would be a great captain for us.

Im unsure if its been mentioned, but Penn lives in York. Signing here would mean him being away from home for much of the week.
Perhaps he didnt fancy that and the package on offer wasnt worth the hassle of living away from home.
You can guarantee that the likes of York, Guiseley, Halifax and even Harrogate could probably offer similar packages as us.

Yeh - I am sure the both Keates and Penn have read the posts on here and thought why bother signing.

The toilet seems quite apt on this.
