Next season's commentary and highlights

It's great that the club is going free-to-air for commentary and highlights next year, and trying to raise a bit of revenue through advertising. As an exile, I've relied on their service for years, and it's improved dramatically in recent seasons.

So, in anticipation I tried listening to Calon FM over the internet. The experience was terrible. It only lasted a few seconds before buffering then cutting out, then looping randomly. (This is on my broadband at home. It's even worse on 3G.) Part of the problem seems to be that the stream is only available as a 256kbps stream. That's going to chew through data allows at around 250Mb per game, or perhaps 2Gb per month during busy periods.

It's vital that this is sorted before the new season, so that there's a very reliable stream that people can use with their mobiles.

PS - I was also going to say that perhaps many of those of us who have been used to paying £48/year for Wrexham Player might be willing to continue some level of payment next season. I wonder whether you could encourage listeners to donate £1 or £2 a month. The website https://www.patreon.com is set up to help small-scale creators get funds like this. I use it to support a guy who draws comics, and he's making about £3k a month now and has quit his job and does comics full time. I'm not saying that the Media team will bring in that amount, but every little helps...

Yep you are correct the stream is awful either direct through the website, the app or through the tunein app. Definitely will need sorting before the new season or stick to Radio Wales😎

Surprised at this. Because clear as a bell on 4G/ 3G in Saudi. No issues with buffering either. This is using the app.

Think they must be having issues as it's doing the same for me but is usually clear?

Re: Next season's commentary and highlights

Hello everyone - One of the Media Team members brought this thread to my attention so I thought I would come and say hi.

Firstly, I am always happy to answer any questions regarding the club's media output and have been out to supporters groups to do so in the past few months. I'm always approachable on any platform if you would like to contact me. I'm also happy to start answering any sensible questions on Red Passion if the community here would find it useful.

I've got to say, when I first read what WAFCexile had wrote I thought "This can't be right" as the main reason I decided to approach Calon FM to platform next seasons commentary was through me analysing their live stream capabilities over a long period and finding it extremely stable. We did have other options, but Calon is the best option for the club going forward in terms of performance levels and workability.

Although, I popped on to have a listen to all of their platforms and it's not so good today. I've contacted them and they are currently doing some work on their stream capabilities in what is 'phase two' of their project with the football club. We are expecting Calon's listener numbers to approximately quadruple when we go on air with commentary. They are spending some time testing in the coming weeks to ensure their stream is ready for this expected boost in numbers, unfortunately this may cause some interruptions to their existing services.

It's interesting that you mention a supporters contribution to the new service by existing Wrexham PlayerHD subscribers or by some of the new listener base in general, as it was also suggested by some of the team during our media meeting last week. I want to make sure we iron out any teething problems and ensure the service is 100% before exploring this.

My aim from the very start of my involvement with club media was to make commentary and highlights free. I hope everyone can support us through this. If there is a desire there from supporters to help support us financially next season I'll certainly look in to it though.

Currently, apart from some camera equipment that the Shreds paid for this season (which has and will save the club thousands of pounds going forward) and a recent donation from the Buckley Reds, Mark and I have personally paid for everything media wise at the club. In some cases paying expenses for our commentators to travel to long distance away matches. I'd dread to think of the figure, but I'd estimate many, many thousands of pounds, which we are happy to help the club save on so supporters are able to keep up-to-date online.

Our main concern for next season is funding travel. With this new service it's even more vital we get someone to every match, even if it's Torquay on a Tuesday night, not forgetting it's not like a fan going to watch a match - it's essentially work and requires a lot of discipline to produce a professional commentary. For these type of circumstances we turn to our student media team members, as others have existing work or family commitments that won't allow for such time consuming travel and the students can't justify the spend required. We are working on this internally but any extra support would be fantastic.

We are aiming for the Calon service to start for our last preseason game at the back end of July. All other preseason games will be covered on the club's Mixlr channel.

On a final note, not to blow our own trumpet, but the Media Team are involved in many projects at the club. Everyone involved is enthusiastic and committed. From Stadium promotion, managing many aspects of the upcoming concerts, Build The Budget, Red For A Day, Nine Acre, PA Announcer management, online customer service, the scoreboard, club digital output and the list goes on... all free of charge to the club and personally invested in with either time or our own money. We're not perfect (who is?) and we will make mistakes along the way - we always learn and move on positively though.

Thanks,
Carl

Cheers Carl, I will mention this post at our next Gwersyllt Reds meeting to see if we can help in any way and maybe encourage some of the other groups to offer whatever help they can.

We've got Liam Partyn and Phil Davies coming down to speak to us, which should give us a good insight into some of the unseen work that goes on at the club.

Thanks Carl for that comprehensive report. I must say I am rather surprised by your comments re donations. My understanding is that the Supporters' Association pays around £500 per quarter for the BT Landline under the Racecourse Hospital Broadcast banner. Further income is donated via the annual Hospital Broadcast Collection , again under the Supporters' Association auspices. Must mention , since you highlighted other groups , that our Former Players Association donated £50 in February this year to this cause. Perhaps I am missing something and the Media team are entirely unconnected to the Hospital Broadcast even though Mark Griffiths is central to both? Perhaps you could explain?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your message. The hospital radio service is a WSA led service and not ran by the Media Team (or the club). Mark is involved linking the WSA and the club to provide that service. Essentially although our commentary is used and we helped by conducting the bucket collection that paid in excess of the amount required for the telephone bill, it's not one of our functions.

The Former Players Association did offer to make a donation to the media team and we must follow this up - at the time the offer was made we didn't know how to process it as the offer was made to write a cheque in our names which we didn't feel was appropriate. However the club can now process and hold money on the media team's behalf.

Thanks Carl , I think I understand. The Media team and the Hospital Broadcast are unconnected with the former's commentaries being online and via Calon FM. Which begs the question of what the Hospital Broadcast's purpose is and why Carroll Clark and his committee are still paying in excess of £2k per annum?

The purpose of the IDSN line the WSA have is to connect the stadium to the hospital radio studio. Once that connection is established we transmitted Wrexham PlayerHD (online feed) to the hospital.

It's existence and how it's paid for is the WSA's responsibility. As mentioned we help them with their bucket collection and all of the media team members get involved with that to show our support.

We are still looking at different solutions of how this will work as we switch over to Calon as the technical set-up will be completely different. If the solution we want to go with works out after testing, it will benefit both the hospital broadcast and the WSA enormously.

Personally, I believe the concept of providing commentary to the hospital is fantastic and has a rich history. Mark is very passionate about supporting it and I hope it continues for many years to come.

Mark met with the WSA committee (including Carrol) two weeks ago to discuss the hospital broadcast.

There are unique circumstances in play at the moment as we are switching from PlayerHD, so Mark wasn't able to answer some of their questions without my input.

Hopefully in the next month or so during the testing period with Calon, I'll be able to give Mark and the WSA concise answers rather than speculating on how the two broadcasts will coincide and what will be required to do so.

The hospital radio service has been going out from the Racecourse since 1957 - during that time it's survived more hurdles than the club changing it's digital partners.

Thanks, Carl. I'm glad you've replied. I have asked a few questions or made comments on the Media Team's social media accounts, but I find that Red Passion generally works better for longer discussions. I think it would be very helpful for you to have a presence on RP going forward, even if you keep your existing platforms as your main way of keeping in touch.

As long as you're aware of the problem, I'm confident it will be sorted.

I'm not sure how others feel, but I'd be happy to continue to give what I was paying to Wrexham Player to the Media Team. As an exile, I can't get to many games, and therefore don't spend anywhere near as much as season ticket holders and other regulars. The Media Team deserve to have a little bit of what I save towards their equipment and expenses. I hope you'd be pleasantly surprised by a response to a donate button. (Although I do think most people would prefer to make small monthly amounts, rather than a larger one-off payment.)

Thanks again!

Hi Dave, No problem. It's the WSA's service, that's made quite clear I think. There is a full page on the club website all about it, it's clearly marked as so during the bucket collections and on air. Carroll hasn't mentioned any issues to us about not getting recognition.

Thank you. We'll certainly explore a donate button function as it's a very good idea.

Hopefully you'll enjoy the commentary on Calon FM next season. We are essentially going head-to-head with the other free-to-air commentaries, so we are working hard on ensuring we have a format that our listeners (Wrexham fans) will enjoy.

A fantastic discussion here, thanks to all of you.

Praise is clearly due to Carl and Mark at the Media Team and Carl's posts have my eyes a bit to what goes on therein!

My question for Carl - the DSA donated a set of Audio Descriptive Commentary equipment to the club at the end of 2016. We've undertaken to assemble a group of volunteers and have them professionally trained and managed by a leading ADC provider (at the DSA's expense).
In order to do this we need to know firstly if the club has an FM license, if not we will fund one. We then need to get the system tested - which would be a job for the 2 Phils, Bennett & Salmon I guess.
Ideally we'd like this service underway as soon as possible.
How can you help us with this, if at all?

Hi Steve, thanks for your message.

First of all, I'd like to say that the addition of ADC would be fantastic.

As we have previously discussed, having a chat with Phil about the frequency the set transmits would be your first port of call, this will ensure the ADC won't effect any of the stadiums existing infrastructure.

I sent though some links from Ofcom's website to Phil and yourself a while ago and that is still the best advice I can offer. It would be a good idea to check with them to ensure everything is okay licencing wise.

Should you get through the testing and licencing hurdles, we'll make sure your volunteers have a place on the lower bench on match days as long as someone sends though their names in advance to assist us with planning.

I'd love to be able to offer more help, but ADC is a very specialist area and none of the current media team members are trained in it unfortunately.

Re: Next season's commentary and highlights

Thanks Carl,

I have literally thousands of DSA emails and that must be there somewhere I guess!

As I understand the equipment it can broadcast across a range of frequencies, so we just need to pick one that does not clash with the existing.
I have been unable to establish though whether the club has an FM license, but am guessing that if there concerns over a clash then, maybe, it does?

It's not a problem that you cant help with the commentators - as you say it is a specific skill set and we have lined up some tip top training.

For anyone else reading we will, at some point, be looking to recruit commentators for this very exciting role....

Thanks again mate.

No problem at all.

There are internal radio systems at the stadium but I suspect that they require a different type of licence if at all. Two-way communication and broadcast are different. For that reason I would highly doubt that the stadium has a 'broadcast' type of licence but I could be wrong.

The Public Address Systems work a wireless FM frequency and there's a whole host of other people using radio equipment on match days. It's just a case of checking what there is and what the ADC can work on and making sure they all work together okay I guess.

I'll dig out that email and forward it on - I hope it's useful.
Surprised at this. Because clear as a bell on 4G/ 3G in Saudi. No issues with buffering either. This is using the app.
Not many hills or mountains there though .
