You said yesterday that Robbie Willmott was finished but with 40 plus assists in the league below and still only 26 yet you're more happy with Rutherford.

Confidence is massive for a player. The whole team lacked confidence and direction last season, Keates did the best he could with those players. Now it's a clean slate and they'll be drilled and I expect them to be extremely fit.
That's because I thought he was over 30, I conceded I was wrong about that. I would absolutely take Willmott if he's not going to be a troublemaker, same with Hurst.

What are people basing their predictions on that Rutherford will come good?

Genuine question because I just don't see it. He's 29 not 21.

Rutherford is simply put an older Robbie Evans.... Runs around a lot without actually doing much. Good workrate with little end product.

It's based on hope, of course it is. But I think players who give their all every game deserve the support of their home fans as it's not guaranteed in modern football these days.
I remember having a debate with someone on here last season. They argued that Riley was finished and that Rooney would not come good. Well both of those were proved to be wrong, so I have the same faith that Rutherford can become a good asset for us when mixed with better players. Maybe I'll be wrong, I don't know, but the fact is neither do you, none of us do.

For where we are he's fine in terms of being a bench player. He's a good pro and I imagine is no trouble to the manager at all. But if he's in the starting lineup on the first day, alarm bells will ring.

Did he miss any games from the starting line up after Keates took over, can hear those bells now. Probably building the squad round him. Just waiting to see the quality signings then a clearer picture.

Rooney came good for about a month or two, overall he was a flop. He was terrible for months before he needed to knuckle down and earn himself a new contract.

But I agree nobody knows. The fact that Rutherford is 29 stacks the odds against you. Who knows maybe in a team of higher standard players he may be able to get involved more than chasing shadows.

You can't really judge his position in the team on this season with Keates. He's had some awful, awful players at his disposal. He's just had to play the best of a bad bunch. Personally feel Rutherford is decent to have. Versatile. Hard worker. Good control. He will also be fairly cheap I would imagine.
