Mould a team together and finish top, and there's no issue.

Some positives apart from the negative that still only 2 teams go up:
Keep season alive for longer for more teams.
Team finishing 2nd & 3rd have a big advantage over the team's coming 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th.
Once teams have secured & guaranteed a play off spot, will probably have to keep playing to get as high as possible, to try and get a bye to the semi and home advantage.

I'm for abolishing the playoffs (which won't happen for economic reasons) and going to 2, preferably 3, automatic promotion spots.

If they want to include an extra team , why not let 2nd go straight to Wembley ( resting players and allowing fans to make arrangements) then let the other 4 play off . Therefore making 2nd place much more advantageous .

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.

On the surface this is good for us because we are no longer a top flight conference team, we are at best a "flirt with the play offs" . So this offers a real chance of getting into the play offs and increasing interest at the end of the season. However, an above average team getting promoted ? Who wants that when the likelihood is a season of struggle thereafter. So for us this isn't a long term positive.

It might make sense if the eventual winner had a play-off with the winner of a Div. 2.play-off involving their bottom two.

I don't quite understand the logic of this change. They've always stopped more than 2 going up because the football league have been worried about a really low par, poorly supported club going up, yet increasing the play offs a few places, one of these kind of clubs could easily sneak into the top 7 and could even battle their way to a final win if they catch the opposition on a bad day.
It could be good for us or it could be bad for us, like most things, hindsight will play a strong role in determining that.

Sounds like you don't want us to get promoted! (Well it would tend to destroy your "the model doesn't work" argument )

Personally, I'd prefer the struggle to stay in L2 to the struggle of getting there.
