Manny Smith returns!!

I have it on very good authority from someone at the club we are in advanced talks with Manny Smith over a return to the Racecourse. What a defence that would be..

I guess this would be seen as a solid signing ,,

With Pearson alongside I certainly would take that ,,

Re: Manny Smith to return

IMO it would be a good signing alongside Pearson as Manny has pace. Not sure whats happening on the Ollie Marx situation as seems to be taking along time to sign!
A few more singings of the same quality will do.

Won't be many better centre back partnerships in the league, great signing if true and Pearson alongside will compliment each other nicely.

I'm not that arsed about Smith returning. He's done nothing in his career to suggest he's one of the best centre backs in this league. Not like Shaun Pearson

this has been mentioned on another thread ...there is mention of his agent wanting obscene amounts just to talk to him.... for me it will depend on which Manny turns up, first season fine.... second season thanks but no thanks

Let's not get excited until it is a done deal, but hope the moaners at the end of the season now see the wisdom of DK's prudence and get those STs sorted.

I dont get that bit. If I wanted to relocate and sign for a club and my agen was risking the whole move I'd tell him to eat shit.

Bit harsh to judge Manny on being played mainly out of position and being coached by an alcoholic fraud in his 2nd season.

Very much this.

An outstanding centre-half, who's impeccable reading of the game, his calmness under pressure, his positioning, his decent burst of pace and his fitness (I've been told by someone who worked with the players that he's "An absolute machine - one of the fittest people I've ever seen") make him an asset.

Poor communication and rather quiet maybe, but with Pearson doing that alongside him he'll excel.

Re: Manny Smith to return

1st year Manny, yes. 2nd year Manny, then Pearson will need to stay close to him. I don't care if he got played out of position for a few games. He got outmuscled too many times in that second season. Cook absolutely bullied him when he was at Barrow, as did the North Ferriby beanstalk striker.

Re: Manny Smith to return

Didn't he play along Hudson season 1 and then Fyfield in season 2? Not really a Hudson fan but would say that partnership (big man foil) would more closely resemble what we'd have now with Pearson. I often thought Fyfield was looking for someone to hold his hand too.

Re: Manny Smith to return

I for one would be glad to see him back. In that second season you can forgive him as he was played out of place and the whole team was disjointed. To be fair I always liked Fyfield when others didn't. He always put a good shift in but was under appreciated by a lot of fans. Manny had that extra bit of class though Imo.

Riley is better than Manny, I don't know why we didn't keep him. Said it at the time that it could have been a mistake.

I agree. While I am happy to go along with DK but I hope Manny, if he signs, is much better than he was in his final season with us.

I don't think there's a significant amount in it to be honest.

A matter of opinion of course but in fairness it would have been a risk given his injuries. Great while fit. I'd probably use a similar argument for White, a gamble based on his issues. I'd not have been disappointed if we had gambled on both.
Manny was asked to play football in his year 2, and that in the right back position. Just not his position or game. I'd be happy if he's slap bang in the middle with Pearson.

DK has just signed a player who has had a 10 month break due to injury isn't that a risk ? yes of course it is life is a gamble .l

Riley is class on his day. But let's be honest, you always feel he's just a game away from half a season out. Manny is dependable, and I think that he will make a great centre back partnership with Pearson. Good move for me

Would be a decent signing but I rate Riley more. It's easy to look like Maldini playing alongside Blaine Hudson

Re: Manny Smith to return

I really don't understand where this excitement to sign Smith has come from? Yes he was a decent centre half 2/3 years ago but the reality is that if he was as good as everyone is suggesting then why would Gateshead be happy to let him go to a fellow play off rival? I can't say I've seen anything of Gateshead other than when they played here and he wasn't exactly standing out as a brilliant defender back then.

It's Riley that we should have kept with Marx behind him in case of an injury but circumstances dictated otherwise unfortunately.

Gateshead fans really rate him and don't want him to leave. Many on their forum say he was their best player last season. He is clearly unsettled and wants to move closer to home in Brum, and that's why Gateshead are willing to let him go.

Personally I feel that he is a better player than Riley - more athletic and less injury prone.

Same reason we let Waterfall go to Lincoln. If a player has their head turned then what choice do you have? I think Smith was their best defender alongside Hogan that day and they kept a clean sheet, can't do any more than that.

Re: Manny Smith to return

I was hoping our currently signed defenders would be able to teach Marx and help him reach his potential. Adding Manny would mean Olly might miss out, and personally I think he has the potential to be better, with the right guidance and plenty of game time.

I'd be delighted if Manny returned. People are talking like he was Shaun Pejic on ice in his second season but he was forced to play out of position for long periods by genius Mills.

Which ended 3 seasons ago; he's now closing in on the same number of appearances in the Conference.

I'd say that makes him an above average Conference defender. Why people are bragging him up as fantastic is beyond me.

Manny smith must hold the record for most man of the matches at Wrexham fc.

You can't really get a more of a reliable pro. Alongside Pearson I think it would be a class pairing.
