Oldest derby
With the upcoming friendly against Cefn Druids, one wonders could this be deemed the oldest derby ?
As we no longer enter the Welsh Cup it is only friendlies that we play each other. It certainly outdates the Liverpool and Glasgow derby's, as we've obviously been playing each other since at least 1876. |
Re: Oldest derby
The world's oldest football clubs have gone head to head in Derbyshire to celebrate the first derby ever played.
Sheffield FC and Hallam FC first clashed on 26 December 1860 with the match played under new rules drawn up by the founders of Sheffield FC. The 153rd derby was won 4-2 by Sheffield FC at their home ground in Dronfield, north-east Derbyshire. Organisers said the aim was to "celebrate the heritage of football". Chairman of Sheffield FC, Richard Tims, said the club had been founded in 1857 |
Re: Oldest derby
Corrected
but oldest welsh derby, and our oldest derby |
Re: Oldest derby
Cefn Druids are a merged club so must be a new club when that merger was set up. The current Wrexham were formed out of Wrexham Olympic so I guess the case for being the oldest derby might be on shakey ground. Its a nice thought though.

Wouldn't suggest to anyone from Druids that they are a new club!! They are very proud (quite rightly )of their history. You could argue that Wrexham FC (2006) LTD , born from the ashes of Administration , was a new club but it's merely nitpicking. Druids v Wrexham is Wales' oldest derby match ....end of.:hurray: |
Re: Oldest derby

I was indeed nitpicking. Who was it who said " History is a set of lies agreed upon". --- C'mon The Druids. |
