At the moment he seems like the only tall target man up front - the other forwards don't have the physical presence Gime offers and have different qualities - Boden had the guile to put his shot high into the net where it couldn't be blocked last night - bang and a goal. Gime has had numerous chances to score but perhaps lacks composure and that killer instinct - keeps shooting at legs and getting blocked or misses the target - there is something there but he has to improve.
I think he's worth a short term deal, can't see him commanding much of a wage, he's got a decent touch and lays it off quite well, none of his chances where clear cut agaisnt Warrington (pronably should have scored the one in The second half). I'd like to see him play alongside Boden first though.

I'm sorry but both of his chances couldn't be more clear cut, for some reason in the first half he took 3 possibly 4 touches from 8 yards out when he should of be hitting it first time and it was the same second half he's taking way too many touches. I'm sorry but from what I've seen his all round game isn't good enough, look at the difference it made when Boden came on.

He seems raw (I know, loads keep saying this) and has flashes where he looks good.

I reckon he is worth a short term deal, if his wage would be low, to see if he can be coached into something more clinical.

Gime lacks basic qualities in front of goal? We've had far too many of those...let him go.

Good to hear Shaun Pearson getting decent reviews from your fans. It's still a bit baffling to a number of our fans why we let him go, especially as we've let 2 other centre-halves from last season leave in Josh Gowling to Torquay (though Josh didn't play much last season) and Andrew Boyce to Eastleigh earlier this week.

Pearson reminds me of Gareth Davies from the late 70's team - he's got a bit of class and culture about him and the rest of the defence fits around him - somebody at last with a voice who communicates and organises all around him.

I can see why Grimsby supporters will be missing him - probably our best pre season signing alongside Carl Darlington.

Just short of a proper recognized specialist right back and a goal scorer up front and we will be complete.

Bigger issue was the pitch was relatively hard and uneven. Playing a ball on the floor always resulted in a bobble up. The pitch was also small which posed its own challenges. Did level things up slightly.

Opposition - two or three very good players and they were well organised and competitive throughout without creating much until the second half. One or two who didn't think it was a friendly.

Dibble - watched him warm up and still think there is a Belford issue on his left side. He collapses rather than dives. Watch his left knee in the videos.

Dunn - could barely kick over the halfway line on a small pitch. Took too many chances kicking out on that pitch and nearly cost us a goal twice. Otherwise, he's okay but nothing special.

Hirst - think he's an attacking full back more than a full back. Repeatedly clears with his head down and not looking, which explains the distribution issue raised earlier. Overlaps nicely but doesn't use the space when he has it. Runs to the defender and loses any advantage and sometimes the ball. This specifically started the move which cost us their goal. Disappointed with him.

Jennings - started positively but carelessly. Wasn't a surprise when he injured himself. His loss created several issues. We were instantly lopsided and lacked an outlet on the left. Moving Carra to left back showed our versatility but also our limitations.

Pearson - excellent in all respects. A commanding talker. Very impressed.

Manny - put all his manifest strengths and weaknesses on display. Came out and repeatedly went to ground instead of standing his man. Exposed the back four in a way better teams could exploit.

Rutherford - always full of energy and almost always found his man, but, wasn't especially progressive and like Carra he often ended or re-started moves rather than continuing them. Didn't play badly but made us look pedestrian.

Wedgebury - good talker but forced backwards after Jennings went off and didn't play especially well or ever look comfortable.

Kelly - I think he may turn out to be a mistake. The ball is clearly his friend but he shirked tackles and his chasing back was token. It wasn't that he didn't. Looked to me like his legs are starting to go. He tried to chase back and was repeatedly out paced. Looked better as the game opened up. He sought to take advantage of it but he wasn't responsible for it.

Holroyd - clever and mobile but patently not a finisher. Also looks to me as though his legs are starting to go as he was far too easy to shut out of the game.

Triallist - couldn't win the ball and was isolated because of Holroyd being taken out of it and our general ploddiness. Clearly isn't going to cope with being pressed in the NL and, whilst he has a nice touch, it's just that. Nothing powerful or predatory. He's basically a placeholder until Keates gets his man.

Wright - didn't look comfortable from the off with the lack of space and width. Some poor distribution and positioning mixed with some great tackling. Suspect he'll look better with Mackreth back and Leo alongside him as proved the case late on.

Leo - Looked stronger and more alert to the speed of the game. Didn't see enough but very much liked what I saw. Made a stronger case than Kelly in a much shorter time.

Massanka - we're trying to play to his strengths and it's showing. Strong, fast and powerful. Clearly worried them the moment he came on and his determination won Boden the chance to score the 2nd. I now see him as starting ahead of Holroyd. He and Boden carry our only real threat.

Boden - player. End of. Lovely touch and movement. Real awareness and a predatory instinct. Great finish too. Looking forward to seeing more of him.

Very much had the sense tonight was about experimenting with certain tactics and pairings. All came a bit undone with Jennings self-inflicted departure so we were a tad unfortunate in that respect. Also had the sense that the first half team was a second string defensive tactic being tried out. Back 4 was very well protected but once the ball was in the box we struggled. Lots of attacking possession and calmness and a deserved lead but not especially inspiring.

The intro of Smith, Boden and Massanka made us look much better but more vulnerable to the counter and so it proved. Lucky it didn't finish 2-2. Given how many talkers we have I thought we were extraordinarily quiet bar Pearson and Wedgebury.

So, a scrappy but interesting workout that raised more questions than answers for me. Are we a better squad than last season? Definitely. A better team? Not necessarily.

Bar two more signings I think we're looking 13th to maybe 8th if we have few injuries or suspensions.

On to Nantwich.
Thank you for another excellent round up of the Warrington game. It is the first pre-season game this year that I went away slightly disheartened.

Positives for me were:

Boden - made a big difference when he came on. Finds space and looks an intelligent player.

Kelly - looks like someone who can unlock a defense (we do not want him tracking back hiding on the edge of his own box, when he can influence play further forward).

Pearson - a leader on the field and looked comfortable all night.

Carrington - can in at left back and did a good job, despite being out of position

Smith - classy centre back at our level and looked composed.

Akil wright - looked like he wanted to force the issue when he came on early in the first half. Can see him edging wedgebury out of the team.

Leo smith - not ready for first team selection as yet, but looks improved from last season.

Negatives:

Wedgebury - looks slow accelerating and was kicking for touch at times. Far too many waywood passes.

Jimmy - not good enough and time to move on.

Hurst - constantly out of position, hoofed passes and running with his head down.

Rutherford - plenty of the ball, but no threat, doesn't tackle and reminds me of joe Clarke in winger form.

Overall we looked shocked that the other team wanted a game and struggled to get going for the most part. Plenty to work on.

Years ago we could have given him a short contract of say 3 months and put him in the reserves to see if he could make it!

That option isn't here now unfortunately. We can't really take gambles with strikers any more.

A reflection of the times - nobody wants to spend time nurturing players and bringing them on, coaching them in the hope of an improvement - well not being the age Gime is (bit different if your an up and coming youth showing promise).

We all crave instant success and live for the 'here and now' - if a player doesn't perform he gets analysed to death and written off almost immediately.
Mcdonagh was a perfect example - when he started with us last season he looked hopeless but I think the improvement in him by the time he left was considerable - last I remember he was playing at Cambridge United.

The season Mansfield Town went up as champions started with Kidderminster Harriers virtually losing their first 10 games - then suddenly they clicked and almost won the league themselves - indeed would have if not for that terrible start. I hope we get off to a great start but with two long distance away matches in the first three games I just hope if things don't go as we hope that people don't start demanding heads roll.
