It isn't always possible to get a friendly against teams from higher up the pyramid when you are playing away. The main point of friendlies from the home teams (fans point of view) position is that the team you are playing has to be an attractive proposition for the fans to want to come and watch - and sad to say it we are not an attractive proposition for local league 2/league 1 sides, unless they want to play behind closed doors. As long as we are in a position on no home pitch in pre-season, we will always be restricted to 'lesser' opposition

It would have been good to see how we fared against a team higher up the pyramid but I recall DK saying on the Dragonheart podcast that they had discussions with league 2 teams but none were prepared to play us at home, only at the Racecourse which of course wasn't possible.

I think its pretty much standard nowadays that clubs look to play home fixtures against bigger teams.

Yes been to all UK ones bar one. I watched them as experimental games early on and as the squad grew Keates was starting to play a more settled team but it was obvious the experimenting continued. At the Altrincham game you could see the start of something good but its still too early to call.
We now have experienced good players who are light years better than last season. I fully expect a reasonable start and by Christmas we should easily be in the top 8 ready for a good push in 2018.
Pre season is what it is and who would you rather us play Blackburn and get thrashed 8 nil ? no, better to play teams that will give us a reasonable match and build fitness levels whilst using the game to experiment with tactics and players.

We still need another proven striker though and I will be disappointed if we don't get one this or early next week and I still think Sinclair will sign if he reduces the alleged high wage demands .

Think people look into pre-season games to much. It is just a 90 minute training session. The real workouts, formations, tactics etc. Are surely drilled home to them on the training pitch everyday. best to make an opinion after a competitive game or 2.

Didn't we beat Bury last pre-season, didn't do us much good in the season really.

I didn't say EVERY team. But season after season you see teams come to the Racecourse and sit back all game. Read between the lines a bit...

I have been to three pre season friendlies, which is perhaps two more than I normally go to. I cannot get excited by what I see as we are playing lesser teams who have raised their game. Our lads are not going to bust a gut in that situation, professional or not. With so many substitutions it's hard to see which formation DK is going to favour. Some on RP are ready with advice though!
Deans signings are good and I have to applaud him compared to what that chump Mills did. It's really crucial to add to the guile and speed that we now have up front. We need a Jim Steel, Danny Wright type who can alter our style of play. For me, we look rather light weight with our present attacking options. Still, there's still time. As per usual, I will give them 5-10 competitive games before I make a promotion or relegation judgement.

Remember that in the Arfon championship team, Dixie wasn't signed until a few games into the season.

It may well be that we have got a decent side but it would have been nice to judge them against players who are of the same standard or slightly better

You missed your own point; ..."difficult to gauge whether we have the quality for the league we are in...". Every player that DK has brought into the club has already proven to have the quality to play at this level. I've said nothing about "a team good enough for promotion" etc. As others have pointed out, we're unlikely to have proven anything by playing 'bigger' teams, the players we have are the players we have, the tactics and formations will make the difference on the day and they're still be tried and tested. From what I've seen so far we are streets ahead in quality over last seasons squad and I'd at least put a deposit down on an open top bus.
