The whole purpose of the Award , as first set up by the Supporters Association , was to honour those who had significantly contributed to Wrexham AFC in whatever capacity. Your grandad's match reports for the Wrexham Leader were required reading for Reds fans over a long period. Ron was a great character and never afraid to voice the truth as he saw it. His was the first Special Award in 2004.

Thanks a lot wafc1926. Really nice to hear that. I still have (somewhere) a lot of clippings of his old match reports. He collected a lot of memorabilia, programmes and the like from his travels with the club we love all over Europe. My mum gave much of it to the club after he died. Appreciate the kind words!

I take it Ron was match reporter before Dave Lovett then?

That's right - he was the Wrexham reporter for the "Big" Leader, and also the sports editor. In our heyday he also contributed Wrexham reports to the national press under pseudonyms (as technically he wasn't allowed to do this outside of his full-time job). One of his favourite pseudonyms was "Todd Sweeney", and that's why I chose it to use on here!

I do remember the match reports from your grandad (although i was young) every report in print during that period was lapped up as it was difficult to find other sources of information, the nationals did run match reports of our games but they were not very comprehensive so the local papers were eagerly anticipated. Interesting stuff Todd

Ron was a great bloke.
We were in the hotel in Rzeszow after the ECWC match and were a bit boisterous, firing corks from the Russian Champagne bottles at little lights in the ceiling. The local police came in and picked on Ron who was escorted to the car outside, whilst the rest of the fans were protesting at the injustice and distracting the officers, A couple of us went around the other side of the car and let Ron out. The celebrations were a little quieter after that.
