Re: Midfield and formation
We looked overrun in midfield. Loads of people have been quick to slag off Sam Wedgbury but he was in a two against Macc's three. He needed a creative player with him but had a 'safe' but pedestrian partner in Carrington. I've loved the effort that Keates has put in so far but he needs to realise that if something isn't working it has to be changed during the match.
Kelly is a talented player but needs to work harder off the ball. Roberts needs to get fit. Jennings needs to show a bit more urgency. Pearson is vocal but needs to direct it towards his team-mates instead of constantly haranguing the ref. Boden looks a decent player but if he has to keep dropping deep to get the ball he won't score many goals. Holroyd looked really good until that advertising hoarding got in his way. Massanka needs to toughen up or he may as well go back to Burnley. Hopefully Keates will apply the same meticulous attention to learning from today's game as he has throughout his time here. So today was disappointing, but hopefully we learn and move on. Last edited by Captain Dread; 6th August 2017 at 00.46:14.. |

Re: Midfield and formation
I honestly don't recall 'long punts forward' yesterday - I think for the majority of the time we played on the floor and were tidy at times but our midfield was over run in numbers - first half especially we were too deep with both Wedgbury and Carrington playing more defensively than attack.
There was a lot of hesitancy too - the ball being passed sideways or backwards too often with any advantage we gained frequently lost as we don't move the ball fast enough up the field. I am not a fan of playing one man up front but given our current playing staff and the fact that we are away from home on Tuesday night the above formation reminds me of Macclesfield yesterday - packing midfield and with wide men on either flank plus a bit of steel by Wright. Already the subs bench looks 'lightweight' so if both Rutherford and Mackreth start there is little in the form of second half impact we can bring on. All this of course could be scuppered with the arrival of a new striker on Monday if it comes off. |

You've made you're mind up about Roberts after one game. Jennings was worse than him. |

My point is that we have right backs in Carrington and Hurst, so to pay a transfer fee for another one and then hand him a two year contract is reckless. Last edited by Foxy; 6th August 2017 at 08.07:23.. |
