we don't want defenders attempting to bring the ball under control from the air in our own half. Even if they controlled it beautifully it would get nabbed before they could play it.

I think we need to remember what league we are in. Expecting conference centre backs to pluck the ball out of the sky and play total football is not realistic.

Call me old fashioned but I think my defenders to defend. Once that ball goes out from the back, its over to the midfield.

I agree.

Their main job is to protect the keeper and the goal. If, after succeeding at this, they have the time and ability to go all Neymar on us..then fine.

[QUOTE=dixienormous;2062718]This. Because both are sitting right in front of our backline the opposition midfield have the freedom to pick up balls left right and centre. I just hope it's a system that will improve with games and obvioulsy dropping Carrington. I think with Reid and a new striker who can hold onto the ball things will improve.[/QUOTE

Holroyd was/is key to this. An energetic link between midfield and attack. IMO the player we could least afford to lose. Hopefully back before too long.

Your old fashioned, then again so am I. Agree with everything you say.

I always thought we were at our best when we had one defender who could do each. Beast was always the man to head it to the moon or lump big diagonal balls forward, but then you had Knight Percival or Riley alongside him who were comfortable playing the ball out from the back.

I expected Pearson to just be a no nonsense "get it out" type of player. But I'm surprised to see he's quite comfortable with the ball at his feet and has a good touch for a center half

What's the point in "lumping the ball forward" if it just comes straight back.

Surely, possession is the major factor in to-day's game.
