I used to enjoy the away days at Gay Meadow. Much better than Chester games.

After 54 years of living in Wrexham, I now live in Shropshire - I feel the rivalry. Great memories of Shrewsbury teams going back to the early 70's. They generally have punched above their weight, in my lifetime. I am envious, wish them well and hope that we can copy them one day. It's all about money, we are told, in football today. The Shrews have a mainly rural fan base (not as potentially as big as ours) but tend to live in the shadows of the big West Midlands clubs. How have they been so successful? Well run, with a slice of luck. As for WAFC, we sold up to the wrong guys and whilst our prospects aren't great, we are lucky to be here!

They've also had more than their fair share of money spinning cup draws in the last few years too.

Even so, the chairman has always had his feet on the ground.

I think it's more ownership really and stability off the field, as sure they do face competition from the West Midlands clubs but no more than we do from the (more successful) Merseyside and Manchester clubs. They are a well run club no question.

Having lived and worked in the town for 40+ years I know many who relish the fact that they are where they are and that we're down here - and keep reminding me! To be fair, though, I know several who genuinely want to see us (and Chester!) back. Other than Walsall they don't have many derbies,

As a kid in the 60's, we regularly packed up the car on a Saturday and drove to away games. I really do miss going to Bury, Rochdale, Walsall, Preston, Burnley, Chesterfield, Wigan (friendlies), etc etc. Never seen a cobbled street before that. We won some and lost some. Sadly, I now have to go to weird and wonderful non entities, mainly darn sarf!

These things go in cycles. It doesn't seem that long ago that we were doing well in the football league and Shrewsbury were in the conference. I'm sure one day the tables will be turned once again.
