Would they stay and then be able to compete allowing for either higher fees when they are sold or fit into the first team and then allow us to compete higher up.

Difficult one to answer that. We've sold in the past to pay off debt but at the moment I don't believe we are on course to be in debt so we don't have reason to sell our youth players. However on the flip side being a conference side its going to be difficult to get them to stay when you have clubs like Brighton and Liverpool come looking. TBH I think we would struggle to keep them even if we were in League 1.

True if we were in league 1 and prem club came in, but if they had first team chances coming up or had seen others coming through as in 90's you would hope they might turn championship down, tough one to call though, you would hope the parents would also see more of an opportunity.
