I later went on to say I was just disapointed we never hit over 4000 , I appreciate we’ve had 2 games in a week etc but when u look at tranmere they haven’t dropped below 4 thousand this season and Leyton Orient only had a few hundred less than us tonight and they are right near the bottom , I just think when u take away the season ticket holders 1750 odd paying supporters isn’t as good as it could and maybe should be looking at the league table and given the size of our catchment area on top of that when we had the orange one in charge the first season our gates rarely dropped below 5000 for a while

Compare our gate with Macclesfield's 1709 for what was effectively a local derby against Tranmere and a team riding high in the league. Well done the 3,900+ who turned out tonight to support the boys.

The season 15-16 we had five crowds that were over 5000,Tranmere and Chester as you would expect and the boxing day game against Southport, halifax and welling were the other games, you were saying??

I thought it looked about the same as Saturday (but there was less away fans tonight).

If we can stay up there then it's obviously going to increase.

But this is our tenth year at this level. TEN YEARS!!

Much as it sticks in my throat to type the words, we are an established non-league outfit. Sixteen-year-olds leaving school this year will only really know us as a conference club, in the same bracket as Dagenham, Woking, Dover or Barrow. By rights, our attendances should have dwindled to below 2,000 like we were getting back in the 80s. But they haven't. They are up there on a par with many in the two leagues above us. Our core support has stayed strong, and even strengthened, despite the desperate decade of failure.

It's wrong to compare us to Leyton Orient and Tranmere. Their fans are currently labouring under the same delusion which gripped me until about 2010 ... "too good for this league", "load of Sunday Leaguers", "we'll walk this", "back in the League after one season ... two at a push". And while Tranmere have a (marginally) better average gate than us, they are down about 13% on last year. Another season in this league, it will dip further.

If we are still top this time next month, our attendances over Christmas and New Year will be pushing 6,000. And not wishing to get carried away, but if we are challenging for the title come the spring, we will end up with sell-outs.

You are right, we have a huge catchment area. But it will take time to get them excited about narrow, edgy 1-0 wins over Solihull. A successful promotion charge followed by a few bigger-name opponents in League Two would really start to realise that potential.

There's no reason why we can't experience what Lincoln are experiencing now. They're regularly getting 9000 a game, up from around 2000 while they were down here before their end of season push last time out.
