I think Twigger may have been a Lancastrian.
I remember someone asking him who he supported, and he replied with “Rochdale ‘ornets, lad”.
Jimmy Johnson was Welsh Schools pole vault record holder, a title he held from his schooldays, probably in the late 40’s/early 50’s, to the early 70’s when fibreglass poles became available.

Ernie was Mr Earnshaw. He was the senior history teacher. Max Freudman's son was in school with us . Think he took over the family business . Memories of a school trip to Interlaken organised by Max Freudman , yes he was Austrian, come flooding back. Was the Geography teacher Lythgoe?

Two things I remember about Danny Harris. In that bitter winter of 1963 he would make us run from the school to the 9 acre just wearing shorts for the whole lesson. He also drove a Jag while other teachers relied on the likes of the Morris Minor. On one occasion we noticed that he had bras and pants on the back seat of his Jag. On the last day of the summer term we arrived at school to find that someone had climbed onto the roof of Grove Park and strung up washing lines between the chimneys full of bras and pants. It even made the national press at the time. Danny Harris was never seen again, thank goodness.

Earnie Earnshaw was often to be seen at the Racecourse.
Strange isn't it that almost 60 years ago many of us started to follow the Town. I left Wrexham in 1965 and have never lived there since, but I've also never followed any other team.
Grove Park could often be quite a vicious environment at times. Rowlands (aka) Rabdosh used to have a Friday Latin test. On Monday he would cane anyone with less than 50%. The number of strokes was dependant upon how low your score was. He had an inside pocket sewn into his gown in which he kept a cane.

Ernie, who lived by me in Rhosnesni Lane, had his famous 'cosh' which he wasn't afraid to use.Max Freudmann used to organise school trips abroad every year.I too was on the Interlaken one.His sons are Anthony and Stephen.Steve was a director of Wrexham at one time and married Bob the Builder's (Tech End Stand) daughter.Lythgoe was a biology teacher.Dickie Walden was the Geography master.
Others I particularly remember were Charlie Hammond, the Latin master who used to punish you with the twist(I suffered this regularly, sometimes with the knuckles to the side of the head as well,) if you had not done your homework,Natty White,Butch(Mr Arwyn Treharne Jones),Boris(S.K Williams) who they said spoke strangely(like Boris Karloff) because he was hit by shrapnel in the war and had a plate in his head. And there was easy going Frank(Mr Spencer Evans),an amateur international for Wales in his day,so they said, who found it impossible to control a class.

But it was a great school.Pupils from all backgrounds were treated equally and most emerged learning the values of manners, discipline and respect which seem sadly out of fashion in this day and age.

Bloody hell, another for "yes there was state sponsored institutionalised abuse, but it made us respectful". There's a reason we don't have that anymore and that's because it stinks.

What have I started here? We are all 60 plus and you can't say Alzheimers has set in with us bunch? I left Grove Park in 1967, Wrexham in 1969 and have been in Manchester ever since . But the draw of the Racecourse and my beloved Wrexham FC takes me back there about once a fortnight with the season ticket and to away games when I can make it. Doesn't matter if we fail to get promotion every year. The warm glow you get when you are amongst others who feel just the same is good enough to keep me going back. Bet most of you old school mates on here are no different.
