Surprise Wrexham FC mentions on prime time BBC programmes - RedPassion.co.uk

Just been listening to the actor Jason Watkins on The One Show and he mentioned that he once was semi professional for our club around the time Mark Hughes was in the area (17 years of age, I think). Love hearing our great team getting any mention prime time (as long as it's not negative, of course). It happened in the last week or so on Pointless too on a "Name a Football team in the top 4 divisions in England without an "I" in their name" category. The guy was confident with Wrexham as his answer, but was unaware that we were out of the league now. Just shows where we SHOULD be ! Brought at least 3 more mentions from the presenters too. Plenty of Wrexham is the Name publicity !
Anyone else wish to contribute others I may have missed that came out of the blue.

Was watching the One Show earlier and Jason Watkins said he had played for Wrexham when he was younger. I would estimate about 25-30 years ago. The name or face does not ring any bells. Any of you with better memories can put a name to the face at Cae Ras.

"Apparently Watkins used to play for our youth team. Previously mentioned memories of running up the sand dunes in Rhyl in 1978.

"Although he grew up in London, the now 50-year-old had a teacher from Wrexham who was also managing a youth team-the Hounslow Rovers whom he played for.

“The teacher would arrange exchange visits with Wrexham Football Club youth teams and I remember we came to Wrexham for a week,” said Mr Watkins

“We played against them and the score was five three to Wrexham. I remember Mark Hughes scored four out of their five goals, and I scored two of ours.

“I got spotted by Arfon Griffiths who had been a Welsh International and I was asked to train with the youth team by the then manager John Neal.”

He added: “I then spent the summer training with the youth team and loved every minute of it.

“I remember Mickey Thomas who was really friendly and chatty, he was about to go to Manchester United. I think he had a red Ferrari parked outside.”"
