Re: Red passion
Rhys Gwynllyw (the founder of The Webbed Robin) is Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of the West of England, Bristol. I believe Peter Davies (the founder of the Red Passion fanzine) is still Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Huddersfield. I believe he went on to co-found a cricket fanzine after the demise of the Red Passion paper fanzine. And I think it was an American guy called Steven Rubio(?) that ran the old Wrexham ISFA (Internet Soccer Fans Association) e-mail list back in the mid-1990s. I seem to remember that he became a fan of Wrexham after reading the book "Twenty-Two Foreigners in Funny Shorts: The Intelligent Fan's Guide to Soccer and World Cup '94" described by one American reader as "The perfect intro for the American fan to the 'Beautiful Game'. This book successfully weaves a general description of the game, a review of all Word Cups prior to US 94, and the author's own passion for his local team - Wrexham, a Third Division Welsh club struggling to gain promotion to the Second Division in 1993. Pete Davies mixes these themes together masterfully. Despite these three unique threads, the book never seems jumbled or hodge-podge." I believe the author is a different Peter Davies to the Red Passion founder. Rhys and Steven were the Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's of their time. I can still remember being totally overjoyed when I first came across The Webbed Robin, I seem to remember Rhys used to type up (or perhaps OCR?) Wrexham news articles from the Evening Leader and Daily Post that I think his Dad used to mail him. This is in the days before either of those publications had a web site. So if you lived say 100 miles from Wrexham at that time you'd get no detailed news and would have to rely on 2 sentences on Teletext. The Webbed Robin was amazing in its day. Tons of detailed match reports and detailed news stories all lovingly curated. The Webbed Robin and the ISFA e-mail list were like going from the stone age to the electric age in one massive leap for fan-kind.

I lived in Kirkcaldy (Raith Rovers) in Scotland in the 80s, my dad used to send me copies of the old weekly Wrexham Leader, so I could keep “up to date” with the club. Saturday afternoons were spent refreshing ceefax. |

"Which brings me on to new chairman Mark Guterman. I don't know a great deal about the man but from what I've read he seems to be bringing the correct attitude with him and hopefully he can also bring glory !" (R.P. Issue 38 page 17) (if only we knew !) Also on page 6, quote from Guterman: "Judge me on what you see, on the signings we have made and what else will happen in the future." (Judgement made..... ) |
