That game was the best. Newcastle scored first I think but Wrexham ham were brilliant. Cartwright goal was icing on the cake for a fine performance. Pitch was dreadful but we made light of it.

Hard to believe it was 40 years ago. Travelled in to the match on the Bidston line and there were Geordies on the train. Nice guys and they were genuinely thinking their team would lose! That's how it was with Wrexham then.

Was only 5 at the time and it was just before I started going (literally - the Arsenal QF in 1978 was my first live game).

However whilst it was clearly a very good result by our best side, the one Bill Shankly said was the best side he'd ever seen outside the top division, we have in my view had quite a few better results - Porto, Arsenal, West Ham, Middlesboro etc. My recollection was the Geordies weren't very good at all at the time and have just checked - they got relegated that year from the top division by 10pts and that was in the 2pts for a win days.

Do recall playing them of course in the league in the following seasons, but in the late 70s/mid 80s between say the Malcolm McDonald era and Keegan going there as a player the Geordies were pretty poor (and also not very well supported either - I lived in Newcastle and it is a much more fickle place support wise than many think/they are not the loyal at all times they often claim to be).

We were in the main stand with the Newcastle fans and it was quite scary
