I walk into the pub. The locals call over "Hey, top of the league now!" You nod sagely, painfully aware that to say too much at this stage is to invite ridicule in a month's time. But you know that you've just spent an hour looking at the fixtures of the top seven, checking which are the six pointers and which away games you're going to find excuses to sneak off to and attend. It's like the gorge rising. It's automatic and you can't stop it no matter how much you try. 14 games to go with a possibility of two or three more if we can't win it straight off but even then you say to yourself, we can still finish second or third and that means a home match which should give us an advantage and even if we finish sixth or seventh with our away following no-one will fancy playing us. Optimism - you can't shake it.

Pep G thinks he's under pressure! Honestly, 4 competitions and an impossible quadruple is nothing compared to what we've got to go through. You look at De Bruyne, Sane and Aguero and you know they're among the best in the world so why shouldn't you expect things. But watch someone who normally can barely control a ball until a third touch or a forward who's efforts are inevitably Row G bound and then imagine that they misread the script and get it right for a change and you start thinking - oh maybe. But I dread having to listen to "I told you they were crap" from those who know no better when the optimism has finally spilt away......until next season that is.

Ah 'Ted' me ol mate , how eloquently you write the words we are all thinking
The optimism
The GOOD new signings
The final pieces in the jigsaw
Being top
And a home game to come
Having THE best defence in the league
A TEAM to be proud of again

Oh yes it's the optimism returning
We ve been tempted by the temptress of optimism so many times in the last 10 years, 92 points, play offs
Now
Is it too much to ask
That once again to have a team to be proud of
Saturday being amongst 700 away fans outnumbering home fans reminded me of a trip to Rochdale in the promotion season 90s? When we had 2 sides of the ground
It's the optimism indeed Ted that takes us back to the promotion party at Northampton
Could we have an awayday similar- perhaps at Orient
Oh the Optimism Ted .... of going to the Racecourse this Saturday with a belief that we really will win , rather than delusions we had of fortress wrexham ha over the years
But to have only lost once at home this season
Oh the optimism Ted
On Keates we trust
UTST
Why the S?
Cos the sheep? We love irony

I am trying not to get my hopes up .. but this has a lovely symmetry about it.

An excellent post and pretty much goes towards saying what we are all feeling, but I must confess my optimism levels are now maybe up a couple of notches than yours. More and more I keep thinking of that 93 season where it seemed we went to every away match in our hundreds if not thousands almost KNOWING that we were going to return in joyous convoys celebrating another victory on our inevitable march to promotion. The trip to Chesterfield was particularly memorable as we took over the Prince of Wales pub and the recently departed King of the kop JACKO, took it upon himself to make sure that, as the songs were sung, every Wrexham fan in that pub donated to a collection tin on the bar for a local kid who needed help for an operation. Places like Halifax were kick off had to be delayed due to the number of away support and of course Norhampton where the prize was finally won (3am I think we eventually got home!). Maybe a little older these days but the excitement is just the same now that the run in is here. Listening to Pearson especially after Guiseley it sounds like the players are up for the battle ahead, no more talk of "staying in touch" or "one match at a time" but "now we are top we need to stay there" which is music to our ears. We have the most honest , hard working team that we have had for a long long time and as dreaded as optimism may be, it stems from the fact that we again have a team that we can feel pride in, every season starts with hope, we hoped that the Tranmere's of this league would not walk away with that distant prize, but it is not their prize.......... there is a song by the Yardbirds (I think) called "This could be our year" I am starting to believe it will be, and that it is only the start of the journey. #utst.

Most saw this as the most attractive away fixture before the season started.
Hotel is already booked for that one, if only to clear the ghosts of last time!!

It’s killing me
Somehow over 10 years I have genuinely started to accept defeat. Even in our best season I was to have one of my lowest days ever sitting on a coach which managed to pass the pub where the 10 Newport fans had gathered to celebrate.
This season has been different and yet again I find myself pouring over form tables and dreaming of Holroyd rounding the Orient keeper to clinch the title.
It’s what football is all about - dreaming. We may not do it but it will not be for the want of trying from all involved at this very special club.

Booked train tickets for Orient...can't see them giving us more than 1500 tickets though

It's all about keeping calm and holding your nerve.
There will be a few ups and downs before the season ends.

Reading through threads like this makes me realise how lucky the older fans have been. Rochdale and Northampton just mentioned and never forgoten. Taking over the main stand at Rochdale, Joey clearing the pitch after the Northampton game.
The John Neil and Arfon years, winning the Welsh Cup regularly, the European nights and the FA Cup. Never disgraced against the might of the first division and Europe.
It will return.
