But I still maintain you can’t be offside in your own half, though you can be penalised for it when in your half.

The best illustration I can give is if, for example, you are the furthest player forward with less than 2 defenders between you and the opponents goal, but still in your own half when a ball is played “ over the top” and you run onto it and score. Not offside because you were in your half when said “over the top” ball was played.

Then we have the same situation but you are 1 yard into opponents half, and ball is played to your feet but is under-hit slightly and you have to step back into your own half to get the ball....offside, despite being in your own half when you touch the ball.

The following is taken from the Guardian when the last raft of rule changes were agreed/implemented....

Offside inconsistency

Elleray: “Part of the law book says when players commit an offside offence you give a free-kick where the offence occurred. The other part of the law book says you give a free-kick where the player was when he was in the offside position. So a player can actually move 20 yards from being in an offside position … and it is only the moment he plays the ball that he is penalised. The law tells you to give the free-kick in two different places.

“So, in future, the free-kick will always be given where he commits the offside offence, even if he is in his own half, because you cannot be in an offside position in your own half, but you can go back into your own half to commit an offside offence.”

Personally i think the new law is wrong insofar as I think that if your first touch of the ball is in your own half you should be considered onside, irrespective of where you were when it was last played.
It's because of the way the offside law works in terms of the player being active. He only gets given offside when he becomes active which is when he tries to play the ball hence the offence can be in his own half when the player is coming back from the opponents half.

I agree it's confusing. It was much easier when a player was offside if he was the wrong side of the last man.

A bit like your little band did at The Shay in October, while our fans chanted for the manager's head. That said it all too, I guess.

Can't deny that, but it didn't stop the Orient fan on Twitter saying, "a 4ft 6ins midget and a 6ft 7 ins Sunday league donkey are absolutely destroying us".

If you play someone offside, you're doing your job.

Why does Marcus Kelly rush out immediately from his position on the goal line and attempt ridiculously to block the cross ?
He was never going to get there in time ! If he had stayed put they might not have scored.
Not my favourite player to be honest. Inadequate in so many ways.

Probably under instruction to move out with the defence if the ball gets cleared, as then there is the chance of an offside decision. Which there should have been but hey-ho!

Exactly, it's not poor defending. It's the exact opposite. Push out quickly, catch the opposition offside. Done to perfection. Apart from the linesman and ref not seeing it.
