Re: Done and McNulty
Doesn’t our position within the league structure (ie 5th tier) have a significant effect on the financial worth of developing youth?
I am prepared here to be shot down in flames, but I distinctly recall someone who does know the ins and outs of youth development finances (possibly Bartonbank?) state that Clubs below L2 level can have their youth ranks effectively pillaged, as Clubs from higher up can cherry pick prospects without having to compensate the doner Club, subject to certain other criteria etc. I understand that most Clubs who have taken youngsters from us in recent years have made voluntary compensation payments as gestures of goodwill. I do recall a couple of young players that were poached by Coventry who, as I understand it refused to pay anything and were rightly castigated by us at the time. A relative of mine has also related to me a conversation he had with Joey a few years ago where he was bemoaning the pointlessness of bringing on youth players only for them to be basically taken from under our very own eyes. This scenario, if substantially true is possibly (or probably) the reason for our lack of player development of late, and nothing to do with our ownership structure. Maybe others more in the know can add something, or correct me. |

Most of the promising players that we've had at youth level are snapped up by other clubs between the ages of 10-14, so anyone still at the club at 16 is never going to be a world beater, unless they are a particularly late developer. |

Re: Done and McNulty
No doubt we will see the same locking the stable door threads about Davies and Edwards in a few years time and no doubt many will be salivating over the chicken feed sell on fees they produce so it can be spent on the next Jonny Journeyman.
Junior, like bagger before him is spot in, sadly no one is really listening.

Re: Done and McNulty
Jordan Davies and Jonny Smith are the two most recent products I can recall who were virtually ignored by Gary Mills when he was here.
I think Keates is more determined to bring some through but this league is not the place blood youngsters in.
