Lots of contracts have those sorts of clauses in. My last role role had an 8 week notice period, due to time served. Dependent on the amount of 'sensitive' information you may have companies can insert a clause stopping you moving to a rival. A previous boss of mine had to challenge this court to take the job where I was employed. This is not uncommon at middle management level and up.

Wouldn't mind Morrison as a punt, not Caton I've witnessed him screaming at a load of youth players telling each one they had no chance of playing for the first team, plus he has no record of promoting youth players.

As I see it.
Walsall would not make an illegal approach.
They contacted the club to ask to speak to Keates.
The club agreed to let them as long as they met the conditions of the release clause.
Walsall agreed the compensation and then approached Keates.
Keates agreed terms with Walsall and said his goodbyes.
Walsall pay up.
Ends.
