Memories of Blyth
Dixie’s goal in first game was dodgy as IMO. Who went to SJP for the replay? Any memories of the Newcastle game too?

Re: Memories of Blyth
I had spent three very happy years living in Newcastle in the late sixties so wasn't going to miss a chance to visit old friends.
As it happened the atmosphere at St. James Park was similar to what it must have been to be in Roarke's Drift in 'Zulu' . There was massive intimidation both to the team and fans and it is to everyone's credit that we came out of the game with a win and more or less intact. Took me a long time to summon up the courage to visit those 'friends' again! |

Re: Memories of Blyth
I was at the home game, not conducive to good football I remember as pitch was rock hard due to cold weather, we got out of jail with a dubious corner in the last minute. Some Youtube links below.

Blyth were one of the dirtiest teams I have ever seen, especially Carney - think he went on to play for Newcastle |

Re: Memories of Blyth
I've heard over the years that the only reason the game went ahead was backstage pressure from BBC who needed something to show on MOTD, almost all other games being off.
The pitch was like an ice rink. Or like a lawn you can't stick a fork in....:-) I've met a few Blyth fans over the years of my sort of age group who were there, and to a man and woman they still feel hard done by. Which in a way they were, but seriously, we were all over them but just couldn't score. A draw, over 90 mins was a fair result. |

Re: Memories of Blyth
I went to the Away game with family could only get into the home side, So had to contain our emotions, Very cold night, However, stayed an extra night and went to the Blyth club the next night and their fans were great plenty of Banter but good humour also. They thought that we were a massive club and were pleased that they made plenty of money out of the games.
