Re: World Cup Wrexham
If we make a few quid I’m on board with the idea, even if it is rugby.

Re: World Cup Wrexham
Multi use facility, and a world cup bid, sounds like ideal focus for some grant funding...

On 27 October 2016, RLIF announced that England had won hosting rights for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. I assume we are bidding to become a ground participant in this as England have secured the the hosting rights. As it is held between 23 October 2021 and 27 November 2021 the disruption to the football should be minimal. Should make some wonga on hosting and from kiosk sales as RL fans can drink all the way through the games. Nice to see some fresh initiatives. |

Not forgetting funding to revamp the kop!

Re: World Cup Wrexham
I thought they had already shortlisted 16 stadiums and will narrow that down to 12
Wembley Stadium – London 90,000 Old Trafford – Salford 75,700 Olympic Park – London 60,045 Etihad Stadium – Manchester 60,00 St James’ Park – Newcastle 52,405 Anfield – Liverpool 45,000 Bramall Lane Stadium – Sheffield 32,600 Richoh Arena – Coventry 32,609 KCOM Stadium – Hull 25,586 DW Stadium – Wigan 25,138 John Smith’s Stadium – Huddersfield 24,500 Langtree Park – St Helens 18,000 Headingley Carnegie Stadium – Leeds 20,500 Haliwell Jones Stadium – Warrington 15,000 Keepmoat Stadium – Doncaster 15,000 Cornwall Stadium - Threemilestone 10,000 |
Re: World Cup Wrexham
I think the rugby league world cup is a mickey mouse tournament myself, but if we were to benefit, no complaints.

Not even proper rugby . . .

Re: World Cup Wrexham
"The Racecourse Ground was used for two games in the 2013 tournament, including a Quarter-Final where Australia hammered the USA with 5,762 watching.
The Council added: “A wonderful festival of rugby that brings tourism to the region in droves, this could be a massive boost for the local economy and tie together the community through sport. The 2013 tournament totalled over 18million viewers worldwide and put Wrexham on the Rugby League map.” 5762, how many times will Wrexham AFC top that attendance this year? |
Re: World Cup Wrexham
If & it's a big if it happens it can only be good for the area & hopefully get a new Kop out of it, instead of being negative about it look at the possibilities that could come out of it, Wrexham council seem to get hammered if they don't and hammered if they do,, I listened in to radio Wales the other day where a Welshman said from Cardiff that the Welsh are a proud nation but always looking on the blackside.

Re: World Cup Wrexham
I hope we do get it but we seem a bit late coming to the table!:)

Re: World Cup Wrexham
As if we’ll get any funding to improve the stadium. Stop dreaming.
There was under 6k for the qf in 2013 so if anything they should use the Queensway or the deva instead. |

Re: World Cup Wrexham
With a previous gate of under 6000 for a quarter final involving Australia can't see the RL being keen on giving Wrexham any matches.

Re: World Cup Wrexham
Two hopes - no and Bob

Re: World Cup Wrexham
We might get a game, in reality of course (and I like league as a sport) a rugby league world cup is not in any way comparable to a Union one.
But they do have expansion ideas (often pie in the sky) so am sure they will want some games to be played outside the league heartlands - Ireland has been mentioned, as has West Country and North East and I'd expect a game or two in Wales. |
Re: World Cup Wrexham
Growing up in St. Helens rugby league is the only rugby!
From other forums I go on it seems that it’s very much going to based in England. Though they would sell more tickets for a Wales game in Wales than in England. Posted via mobile theme |
Re: World Cup Wrexham
10,600 for a rugby league game at the Racecourse. When will WFC top that attendance?
over 8,000 for Wales v USA in RLWC2013, but less for the Quarter Final as Wales didn't get past the pool stages. Even if you don't like rugby league, a Rugby League World Cup game would do wonders for the town and show the Racecourse as a multi-use stadium and attract some much needed funding. |
Re: World Cup Wrexham
Prefer RL to the Kick and Clap code.

The only reason i can see them asking for more bids is the Cornwall ground. This is still not under constuction (and never will be). But they really don't need any more bids because the current ones are to be whittled down to 14. |
Re: World Cup Wrexham
Cornwall Stadium got planning permission and voted through by Cornwall council a couple of weeks ago; intention is for Truro (who are in Conference South play offs - just possible we may play them next season) and Cornish Pirates RU to play there.
Was a long process it seems getting Cornwall council to vote through the money for the ground but looks like that will now happen. They'll want a game or two down there I think, though it is a proper rugby union heartland area. Bit surprised Bristol and Cardiff aren't on the shortlist; the games in the last two league World Cups in Bristol have been pretty well supported. |

Once, against Salford; twice if Tranmere don't win the playoffs. |
All times are WMT (Wrexham Mean Time). For non-town viewers the time now is 03.20:48. |
