Scotimp here, lurking Lincoln supporter. I very seldom post on here - it isn't my club after all - but I have something worth considering regarding the next managerial appointment.

A good starting point would be to take a look at the clubs who have won promotion from the National League in the last few years with a view to establishing whether there are any common threads connecting them.

Our board of directors - specifically the new director Clive Nates - did exactly this in April 2016 when Chris Moyses stepped down as manager. Clive later told me that he had identified the right man, and by happy coincidence that man had applied. That man was Danny Cowley. We are not being wise after the event here.

The evidence of the last eight seasons tells you that you need an experienced non-league manager to get out of the National League. Consider the following list of promotion-winning managers:

2016-17 Danny Cowley & Mark Cooper
2015-16 Gary Johnson & Paul Hurst
2014-15 Martin Allen & Darrell Clarke
2013-14 John Still & Richard Money
2012-13 Paul Cox & Justin Edinburgh
2011-12 Micky Mellon & Gary Mills
2010-11 Steve Evans & Terry Brown
2009-10 Graham Westley & Chris Wilder

Virtually all of the above had won previous promotions further down the non-league pyramid, and virtually all had made the National League play-offs on at least one occasion previously. In other words, they were non-league specialists with excellent track records. No rookies whatsoever.

What about this season? John Askey and most probably Micky Mellon - both vastly experienced in non-league football.

On the other side of the coin, look at who Hartlepool and Orient appointed during the close season after relegation: Craig Harrison and Steve Davis, two managers with no knowledge of the National League or non-league football whatsoever. Predictably, they were an unmitigated disaster.

No managerial appointment can guarantee success, of course. The trick is simply to give yourselves the best possible chance of succeeding. I know the criteria I would be using.

I got talking to Gary Johnson once and was struck by how much he knew about Wrexham FC and how much respect he had for the club and its history. Would be fantastic if he came.

Pie in the sky surely? He’s contracted to a club in a higher division. Who knows what compo we’d have to pay and why would he take a big pay cut to move away from his south west roots? We need some realism on here. Bellamy? Crazy suggestion. It depends in part on who is free at this time of year and is interested and applies. I can see us appointing someone into their first job (loads of coaches and assistants out there looking to get on the first rung I’d have thought) and,if not, someone whose done a decent job in this league without setting it alight. Most managerial appointments eventually end in failure. That’s the nature of the beast (no, not that beast).

It’s a huge gamble whoever we appoint. As surely even the most opinionated (not you PD) on here must appreciate. If they think there’s an easy answer they are kidding themselves. How many welcomed the Flynn or Neal appointments at the time? In the good old days before social media of course but look what happened then.

The obvious choice from the board would seem to be either Adam Owen or Harrison - both of them underwhelming IMO.
