40th Anniversary
It now seems so long ago, now. Since then we have never won a league again (been promoted twice, chwarae teg) but have been relegated 5 times. And my point is (before I am asked)....sometimes we expect too much. |

Is expecting a team to do the very basics of pass, control, move, attack and shoot on target expecting too much? Is expecting a team, once ahead in a game, to see it out and show the mental toughness and commitment expecting too much? |

Re: 40th Anniversary
When you think that 3 or 4 seasons in the division 2 / championship is our hey day its quite sad.
Teams that i laugh at - have also got there recently Burton Rotherham Rochdale Yeovil Bury - all these clubs bar Rotherham struggle to get 3000 at home Brian Flynn then got us up and running on a shoe string budget to be fair I think it will take huge investment ( that we havent got ) to ever see those sort of days again |

Re: 40th Anniversary
In the short term (ie this season and particuarly last season), all of those are entirely reasonable expectations, and I totally agree with you, given where we are with what we have, resources and player-wise.
But I was looking at the broader picture which sees fans (even after 10 years at this level) expecting because of history that we should go up/have the absolute right to go up every season. 1978 was the only league title we have ever won since we joined in the FL (in 1921, so the centenary is autumn 2021). 1/97 title wins inc Conf seasons. Promotions 1962, 1970, 1978, 1993 and 2003 which is 5/97. In hard statistical terms, we win the league we are in 1% of the time, and get promotion 5% of the time. We get relegated 7% of the time. We stay where we are 85/97 times, so 88% of seasons we go neither up nor down. As this season. So, we should not expect too much, even in a lower league. Since we have been in the Conference the finishing positions have been 10-11-4-2-5-17-11-8-13 and whatever depths we reach come 2.45 Saturday. |

Re: 40th Anniversary
[QUOTE=Oswestrian;2138852]On Sunday (29th April 2018) falls the 40th anniversary of the day we won the Third Division at Hereford.
Remember it well as I was with my heavily pregnant wife sitting in their main stand. She had a funny turn and had to be assisted by first aiders , luckily she was O.K. and we didn't have to miss any of the match. 0-0 as I remember and was a young Kevin Sheedy playing for Hereford? |
