In one way I can see the benefit of going with a core squad of just 18 players. It is enough to fill the match day squad without having to effectively pay lots of players to sit on their asses doing nothing and having no involvement.

Any money saved on these 'extra' wages can then be utilised elsewhere (either pre season in getting higher quality players in, or during the season on loans or if players become available) and I'm sure if push came to shove we would be able to loan sufficient to cover any injuries or suspensions if needed.

I believe the small squad is down to costs (obvious statement really) rather than a personal choice. As I said above, why pay players to not be involved, or to involve them would require to join a reserve league that will likely add further costs.

I have no issue with going into the season with a squad of 18 as long as any players recruited now are of the high quality needed.

And as long ad we never have an injury. Or any suspensions. Or any losses of form. Or any need to change the way the team plays. And every signing is a success. And Leo Smith and Doug Tharme both are trusted and repay that trust by being good enough immediately.

I can't believe anyone thinks it's a good idea.

I understand the need to recruit correctly and I also note what other clubs are doing / not doing regarding recruiting new players but we got rid of 8 players and Sam talks of recruiting just 4 more plus a couple of loan players .
This has disaster written all over it !!

I think I mentioned its ok if we can get loans in to cover the above possibilities?

If not, that was my reasoning.

Unless someone can show me otherwise, I can only ASSUME that we don't have the money available to support a larger squad of say, 22/23 players. Unless, maybe, we accept players of a lower quality?

So, if ultimately the budget will only stretch to 18 players, of which the majority are of the quality needed to push for promotion, then I guess that's the way we go. And hope we get favourable loan deals if needed.

Its not the best solution or possibly even a good idea, but if that's the hard truth then that's how it will have to be.

Our constant dipping into the loan market has just been another extension of how poorly managed the football operation has been, a revolving door of tyre kickers and occasional quality we can't hang onto.

If we can only afford 18 players then the club isn't even being well run financially. This isn't just something to be written off as one of those things.
