1 is affordability and 2 is attracting those players to the NL. There maybe have been 1 or 2 better players around this season that have come good. Wedge is proven and was a major reason why we were so hard to beat for 4/5ths of the season. We should be keeping him and improving our lot around him. Eventually Wright maybe the better option but currently the squad and team will be weaker without him.
Depends what type of team you want or more importantly Sam wants and the formation.

I would prefer to see passing through midfield just like other NL teams do against us. If were going 442 then the 2 CMs need to be dictating the play and not running round like a terrier on steroids.
Likewise 433 with the 3 midfielders all passing the ball with 3 forwards taking players on. Penn was better and so was the CM who played alongside Lee Fowler whose name escapes me, so is Turnbull and many others.

We can get better than Wedgbury , but we can also get worse. This season he has been part of our defensive strength , and we need to build on that - can’t keep having complete overhauls. There is a danger that him, Smith and Pearson could all leave and that would take us significantly backwards.

I hope you are right Paul. I think he is one of the few who can claim to have given 100% for virtually the entire season. I accept that he has limitations but still feel he could do a job for us if combined with a more visionary midfield general. I can only say that if we replace the whole team with a better standard than him then I truly believe we will win the league.

BTW I understand that he commutes from Sheffield so perhaps he could be tempted nearer home ?

Those 3 at their best would do the job, but the trick is unearthing players like that before every one else including FL clubs want them.

I too was thinking about Penn when I posted and a younger Penn would be great but there arnt too many about and at his best he was in the FL.

Fowler was a great at this level, but everywhere he went he took baggage and the only reason he came here and was playing in the NL.

Turnbull is steady but no better than Wedge.

I agree 433 was better for us but when we did play it, fans were screaming out about no wingers and width. I was surprised Keates went 442 but maybe he knew the limitations of his squad and he thought that was best fit.

Yes we probably could get better than Wedgbury but there are players far worse than him that need improving on first.
Wedgbury is good enough IMO and would improve with better players around him, players who would enable him to concentrate more on his own game rather than having to do the work of others around him as he has had to do so this season.

If we are just looking to replace 4 or 5 players, then Kelly, Frank's, Deverdics, Boden and Ainge are all needed to be looked at before Wedgbury.

You could also add Mackreth, Jennings, Quigley(not ours, so needs replacing or signing anyway) Leo Smith and Marx to the list if you wanted a mass cull.

Wedgbury is the type of player we should be encouraging to shoot on sight if within 25 yards, something we haven't done enough of for several seasons, instead of the tippy tappy bollocks we play until we lose the ball on the edge of the opposition's penalty area.

So get working on that over the summer Sam

Ainge was another loan signing wasn't he?

The fan opinion wheel is turning. Wedgbury all of a sudden isn't good enough and we need to replace him with a passer. If fans get their way you'll see passers in there who get dominated when the chips are down and the fan opinion wheel will soon come around to "we're too tippy tappy and we need someone to break up play". In reality you need to complement Wedgbury's defensive play with the skills he lacks alongside him, not throw the baby out with the bath water just because waaaaaaa we came tenth and we want blood. We could have done that this year with a 433 but for some reason chose not to. The scourge of this club at the moment is the boom and bust; if we move on someone like Wedgbury it probably means the usual dozen new players and the same old wait for methods to take hold.

I think with a couple of better midfielders around him Wedgebury is good enough option. His break up play is very good but his distribution in general is poor. Been said before that if we can get a midfield general like Ferguson in there to dictate play things will be so much better.

Wedgbury is great.

Great defensive midfielder and breaker up of play.

His passings not great, but he is so good at the other aspects of the game we cant afford to lose him, but make sure he has two other midfielders alongside him that compliment him.
