We'd have been lucky to get £5k never mind £20k and we've probably covered that via his signing on fee and saved wages.

This reads to me that Wedgebury didn't conspire to sign for chesterfield and get out of our contract.
News he was a free agent got out, he was approached and as it is so local he would be mad to turn it down if he wanted to keep on playing.

lets cut the lad some slack and move on.

Agreed - lots of people very precious about ex players that leave us (the good ones anyway).
It'll be 'Sam who' in a couple of weeks. He did a good job while he was here, lets just leave it at that

Local lad Sam Wedgebury also joined after cancelling his own contract at former club Wrexham. Allen said the 29 year old is someone he's admired when facing him in the past. "I didn't really like him because he always played well against my teams. I left a message on his phone last week while he was away on holiday and a text message came back straight away saying 'If this is really Martin Allen I want to sign for you and I can't wait to get home to Sheffield'."

"I didn't need to talk to him about money or wages, he was just desperate to sign and play for this club."

We paid more than 5k for Deverdicks to a cash strapped club that pretty much had to sell. Wedgbury is better than him.

This is a great point. Can't believe it hasn't caught on across the whole footballing world yet? If a player is offered a more local club they can just cancel their contract and move.
Think of all the 100's of millions that could be saved?
Real Madrid wouldn't have had to pay 70 odd million for ronaldo, he could just have gone because it was nearer Portugal than Manchester.
Also the comment about letting him rot in the reserves? Isn't really valid anymore as some clowns decided we didn't need a reserve team.
He would have been made to play in the first team. Wouldn't be the first player or worker of any description to be doing a job he doesn't really enjoy.
Didn't see kev Roberts or Mackreth been allowed to just walk away from there previous clubs?

Better at running and covered a lot of ground but other parts of his game were poor.

Was he any better than Rob Evans or Joe Clarke?

I’d say Clarke was better than him!!

The figure I heard was that we paid £5k. Whether he is better or not is moot as at the time we bought him, he was highly rated by many and £5k was deemed what he was worth.

Transfer fees between National league clubs are ridiculously low and there's no way Chesterfield would've stumped up a transfer fee.

Anyway, he's gone and by all accounts Chesterfield didn't approach him until after he left so there's not much more to discuss regarding this.
