442 is completely outdated. Everyone knows how to play it and everyone knows how to play against it.
How is 4-4-2 out dated? Can you explain the differences between 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-3? I'll give you a clue - the answer is very little!!

Essentially it all depends on the roles Sam gives each player. You can then fit that role into any formation depending on the opposition.

I doubt however if we were to go 4-4-2 we will see two traditional wingers in midfield. We will invariably end up with one winger, a more defensive midfielder, one that should be linking play and one creative/attacking player. Where those fit into the formation is anyone's guess.

My ideal roles would be:

GK - Sweeper - some one is willing to rush out, able to use their feet.
Full backs - 1 who is more defensive, which will allow for a winger/attacking player on front of him, and one who will attack more or tucks in to midfield to give us more bodies.
Centre backs- one who is good on the air and one who can actually pick a pass so we can build from the back rather than giving it back to the opposition.
Midfield- Defensive who can win the ball in the air, creative player who can find a forward, attacking player to get forward with our striker/strikers, a player to link between the lines.
Forwards - someone that can hold up the play, someone with pace to stretch the opposition and someone that can pull defenders out of position.

With some of the roles you can give players 2 responsibilities etc or you share them out singularly. The obvious downside is the majority of National league players have limited tactical intelligence.

Oh come on, I think we all know that a 4 4 2 of s = \sqrt{\frac{1}{N-1} \sum_{i=1}^N (x_i - \overline{x})^2}. is so yesterday. You need to watch more Monday night football my friend.

Any formation is only as good as the players and the adaptibility during a game.
442, 532, 352 all require the FBs to provide support to the midfield and foward line.
Are Roberts & Jennings capable if SR releases those defensive shackles from last season hmmmm!

433 requires interchangable forwards and ideally 1 of them a tricky winger.
All this 4231, 4141, 451 stuff is based around limitations in the players and managers try to pack out the midfield to avoid losing the battle.

2 or 3 decent attack minded players and formations become so much easier. Liverpools 433 or Citys play anyway style cannot be copied at this level so KISS is the name of the game with a well balanced team.

How about none of the above and 3 4 3 using wing backs this is the formation adopted by Wolves and where Ricketts has completed his most recent apprenticeship.

We have two big standard full backs contracted for another year. In essence, those two drive the formation - so it has to be 442 or 433,even the latter is problematic because it helps if full backs can provide width in that system eg Ashton and Obeng

There really is no difference though. If you start as a 4-4-2 but have a "second Striker" who drops deeper to get the ball with advanced wingers then that quickly has become a 4-3-3.....or has it become a 4-2-3-1?? Formation talk is pretty irrelevant it is all about the attitude of the team and their style of play
