Can remember us playing both Newcastle United (4 - 3 win) and Liverpool in the same pre season, at home pulling in very good crowds and big money in the till - appealing opposition that generated high interest and money being spent. And then there's Forest Green..........

Raising money is what the Stereophonics was for. Playing Forest Green is what a meaningful football test is for.

Surely we should maximize all our opportunities to make money - not pick and choose - with more appealing opposition it could bring in floating or new punters for the first time perhaps hooking them for life - FGR wont even pull in the diehards. I suppose the balance would be to aquire opposition to provide a good test but at the same time put on a showpiece and attempt to get a good number of bums on seats spending some money at the only game we have before the league season starts.

You say this as if it wouldn't have dawned on the club to ask a top team to come. Loads of clubs want them, only a handful can get them. Plus there is no balance between a hot ticket in a friendly and a worthwhile test; the hot tickets put on an exhibition that is no use from a football point of view and anyone who is useful is only of interest to diehards. People would shriek less if we played Rochdale instead of FGR but it would amount to the same thing in practical terms.

I thought the Newcastle game was a testimonial for Dixie? Liverpool game was a testimonial for Joey a few seasons before.

Joey’s testimonial was 1993, but we played Liverpool again in 1994, 9 days after Dixie’s testimonial.

Yes you remember correctly.

Think it was the same match but not quite certain - does anyone recall a pre match Red Arrows ? parachute display team that dropped in from the sky onto the pitch - only one of the team missed the pitch and ended up on the old Mold Road Paddock / terracing which was disused at the time.

And Stan Boardman goose stepping around the pitch in his German Uniform, shorts and wellies whilst the actual testimonial match was actually in full swing at the start of the second half.
