Bloody hell. .. seems to start earlier each season. .. I remember when it used to start around mid august. ..at least you could have your holiday without missing the start of the season.

I seem to recall being told they play a lot of games quickly, so that by the winter, hopefully there are 1 a week and the pitches hold up.

As we know a lot of the pitches ain't the best in this league and they hope after they get through the Winter period there isn't too much backlog

Think your theory is 100 % sound.

Not forgetting that later in the season we have to accommodate both Trophy and FA Cup games - it's imperative to clear a good few games early on otherwise the season would never end - had some fairly mild winters in recent years but in the event of a really bad one we could be playing massive catch up towards the end of the season - and lets face it, sitting in a plastic seat on a cold February night is no fun compared with late summer / Autumn.

The downside is, as has been mentioned - many people are away on holiday in August but we will never find a perfect world that suits everyone.

The conference fixtures are generally released two weeks after the Premier League and Football League fixtures. This is because there are teams in the conference that can't clash with teams in the PL/FL and the conference dont get to see the fixtures before.
