Often wonder why a club at our level need an assistant manager. Wouldn't it be better to save his wage for another player? It's not as if there are no other persons at the club with football/coaching/ scouting ability.

The manager cannot take all the coaching sessions and run the team on his own as there are times he will have to be negotiating loans, signings etc. so it makes sense that he needs an assistant. Ideally an assistant manager that was a player would make the cost saving that you refer to.
If Darlington was FT then we probably wouldn't need anyone else.

Looks like the man will be in place soon once he returns from holiday.
