This is the bit I would like to know more on. How much do we get from this as a number of youngsters certainly move on at a young age so there is an income.

There is a also a community element here as well that we are providing. I agree £85k is a huge sum but also we are more than a name but a club that supports development of local talent.

One day hopefully we will be back in the league and players will stay longer as they see a progression to first team. To scrap it and start again in 5 years would be a huge task.

Being in the National League can't help with retaining young players.

If the player and his parents want to go because a team from higher up the pyramid wants them, I don't suppose there is any way we could stop it happening. So then it becomes a case of just getting the best deal possible for the club.

We used to get a fixed fee based on how many years they had been with the club. Until about 2012 there used to be tribunals and higher fees but the premier league threatened to remove the solidarity payments to league clubs unless they signed up to the current system.

From the BBC website:
The new tariffs will see a selling club paid £3,000-per-year for every year of a player's development between the ages of nine and 11. The fee per year from 12 to 16 will depend on the selling club's academy status - but ranges between £12,500 and £40,000.

So the youth system does make money and can continue to do so...

Just because we don't sell one player for £100k+

We won't receive these fees any more under the new rules.

There are some clubs friendly to Wrexham who will continue to contribute.

There has been an argument for some years that payments ceased to be valid when Wrexham left the EPP 2 years following relegation when contracts cease.

Certainly Everton and Crewe took this view although clubs friendly such as Liverpool and Stoke continued to be honorable. There was thought to be some protection under FIFA international clearance rules although the value of this wasn't really ascertained.

Certainly its debatable whether it could ever be relied on for English players as the FIFA player status rules expressly rule out trials and friendlies which is all the U16 and below ever play (therefore an English player playing for Wrexham technically never moved territories it can be argued).

5.
Official matches: matches played within the framework of organised football,
such as national league championships, national cups and international
championships for clubs, but not including friendly and trial matches.

However some protection is offered for Welsh players via the 50km border rule contained within the protection of minors section which in essence precludes any welsh player moving to play in England until they turn 16

The player lives no further than 50km from a national border and the
club with which the player wishes to be registered in the neighbouring
association is also within 50km of that border. The maximum distance
between the player’s domicile and the club’s headquarters shall be 100km.
In such cases, the player must continue to live at home and the two
associations concerned must give their explicit consent.

Over 16 by virtue of being contracted to the youth scheme always required compensation. The worry is this will cease from the end of the coming season if non league teams but there is protection under the professional clauses of the regulations. In essence a professional is one who's payments are in excess of costs incurred. This is how Chester got good money for the 2 lads who moved despite not being part of the football league youth structure.

I'd suggest the club needs to get legal advise on structuring protection using the FIFA rules but also continue to hold out the hand of friendship to clubs who will continue to treat Wrexham well even out of the scheme. Liverpool and Stoke need to be nurtured as valued partners.

So will it now be more beneficial to the club to try and get youth players good enough to make the actual squad and then be on some kind oc contract?

Also i note that there will be a swith to a player/student model. Can anyone explain what this means for me?

Bagger - if Wrexham had an academy under the FAW scheme would we have more protection under the FIFA laws?

I feel for the lads and their families - pinning hope on empty promises of being taken on by wxm
In reality many are simply canon fodder and will be released - no progression with no reserves either
Fair play to the kids who are desperate for a chance of stardom but i think the club should be honest with them and say they are skint and chances of progressing are painfully slim
Out of the teams we played last year ( many of whom are tinpot ) how many started 16-19 yr olds against us , very few id guess , especially in key areas like striker or centre half
This is a mans league and we simply to not have the time or money to let the Youths develop into young professionals - very sad
Id advise them - play welsh prem if possible and go to college - if your good enough someone will pick you up
