I’m not having that. He moved for better coaching and most likely, better wages. That’s hardly jumping ship. On the plus side, we got a decent fee for someone most didn’t think was that good.

My one memory of him was in a pre-season match with Stoke. He went into a 50-50 with Shawcross and walked away with him on the ground. "got bottle", I thought. But sadly no pop inside.

From memory he broke his leg very early after the move, given his key assets were energy, work rate and sheer desire it would have knocked him back. The biggest test of any young player is often that 1st bad injury, some ride it well, others are never the same. With any young player fortune often plays a big part in their development.

I thought he got his chance under Morrell and as soon as someone came in for him he was off.
