Default Apparently SDR is hopeful says Daily Post

Written by Rob Griffiths, Daily Post
SAM RICKETTS is hopeful of adding new faces to his Wrexham ranks this week.

The former Wales international oversaw his first game as Wrexham boss on Friday as the Dragons ran out 2-1 winners at Lex XI to kick off their pre-season schedule.

The match was shortened to two 30-minute halves with a water break midway through each period as the players looked to combat the blistering heat.

Ricketts used a 11 senior players in the first half, in which Wrexham took the lead through Chris Holroyd before being pegged back by an excellent Matty Williams effort, while the Dragons chief made wholesale changes for the second 30-minutes, playing a side full of youth players and trialists, Michael Elstone firing the winner for the visitors after the break.

Wrexham, who have only been back in pre-season since last Monday, travel to take on Huw Gray Alliance side Airbus UK on Saturday for their second summer friendly, before then embarking on a tour to Portugal the following week with Ricketts keen to have added to his options before then.

When asked about new signings, Ricketts said: “That would be nice if we could just get a couple in, certainly before going to Portugal.

“Offers are in place, we are just trying to get a few over the line.

“But like I have always said it is making sure they are the right people as well, so hopefully we can get a couple in next week.

“Has it been frustrating? I think that is just the scenario, especially going after the players that we are who are also wanted by (Football) League clubs as well.

“Sometimes it is hard, you are trying to get the best players you can and it is now at the point where it is good because you are back in pre-season and players are thinking ‘oh I need to get a few things tied up’.

“That is where we are up to. It will come, and it is quite amazing that players that weren’t available last week are suddenly available this week.

“So you could go and buy everything two weeks ago but then you are thinking that that other player is just now available when he wasn’t available two weeks ago.

“So things happen very, very quickly, when do you go for the players? There might be something better but there might not be.

“But we are gradually getting there.”

I think we'll see someone before the trip to Portugal, whether it's this week or the very start of next week will remain to be seen.

Whether said someone is worth the wait is up for debate, though.

So, Graham Barrow, Alun Andrews, Jussi Jääskeläinen, Luke Young, Mike Fondop-Talom and Luke Summerfield in now. Are people starting to warm to Ricketts? Summerfield was announced without any links so the people asking daily about rumours and such, maybe this signing demonstrates that we can be in for players without it being plastered on here as frustrating as that may seem.

Only the last three count there. He could have Jesus Christ in his backroom team, but it still all depends on the players.

The test for me is if he can get quality up front, we will rise or fall on that.
