My hero as a young man - will always remember his header at Oxford in the 76/77 season which I swear was from outside the area ! My over enthusing about him at uni meant my nickname was “billy” which I was very happy about :)

Was it back in the season we didn't go up, or the following one when we did, he scored all the goals or most of them in a 6-0 romp at Chesterfield....

With them coming up soon on the fixture list could an invite be e3xtended for him to be guest of honour....

It was indeed in season 1976/77 that Billy scored 4 goals in a 6-0 away thrashing of Chesterfield. He scored a total of 27 goals that season including 20 in the League. Billy was chosen , alongside Arfon Griffiths , in the PFA Division Three team of the season.
Billy is a regular FPA guest at the Bamfords. Not sure of this season's guest list but will ask our Secretary.

With this Chesterfield fixture on the near horizon, thought above fixture may be good subject to concentrate on rather than the loss in the quarter final, which no doubt will get mentioned ……

September 11th 1976.

Indelibly imprinted on my memory.
Billy got 4 goals I think, including one that put both the ball and the keeper into the net!
It was at the end of the long hot summer and it poured with rain all day.

Oh, and I remember one other thing about the day.........I got married.:):)
The result was a great wedding present

My number one goal that one as well. He was a hell of a long way out - at least the edge of the 18 yard box.

My Wrexham gnomes name is Billy in honour of that goal.

Thanks Moyn. Your a star.

I was only 7 and had always wondered who we were playing when he scored that incredible goal. I remember the crowd erupted and went wild.

I loved Billy too. He was my first football hero. I hope the young kids still have heroes, because i have never forgotten what it felt like to see him on the pitch and then strutting his stuff in the centenary club

I also remember that he was a fab artist. I mean how many cult centre forwards in this day and age can also whip a pencil out and knock a portrait out of their team mates?
We were well spoilt.
