Re: Champions

It's far too early to feel confident - we have played teams with worse forwards than we had last year. B.Wood should have been out of sight by half time.
However it is obvious that our team is much better than last year - we appear to have a better manager with a more positive attitude and approach to the game, we certainly have better players.
Given that we only just missed out last year it would follow that we should at least get to the play offs.
Champions? - it is possible if the team continues to improve - whatever happens we are heading in the right direction.

A clever manager susses out any weakness and brings in strength.

Sam Ricketts is a clever manager.

You also need to play with confidence.

To be confident you need courage to get rid of fear.

Playing with confidence in front of big crowds because you have nothing to fear.

The last Wrexham manager who got us crowned as champions in 1978 told me last year.

"We did it by playing with no fear."

Those words ring true.

Stick it up on the home dressing room door.
In life, you can think the worst or you can think the best.

Confidence builds success.

If a boxer goes out into the ring and thinks he's got no chance.

He ends up on the canvas.

Champions is a state of mind. It's the way the management set their stall out. Its the way the players play for each other not for themselves.

It's never accepting second best.

It's putting a bit of All Blacks polish on your football boots.

Imagine if this thread runs a whole season...

And we end up Champions.

Nobody will care about how we did it.

But we will all revel in the success.

And it will be the believers on the pitch, in the dugout and on the terraces who will get us there..
Thats all very well and good but means nothing, ultimately it's the quality on the pitch that gets you to be champions.

Not wholly true.

You could have great players throughout the team but if they either don’t play as a team or believe in themselves they will probably flounder.

We are still weak in a few areas but the squad is looking good if we can bring in a catalyst to up our game for 90 mins.:)

Birdy,

Everything means something.

Nothing means nothing.

Put 11 world class players on a pitch and they can still be beaten by a team playing with passion who are playing for each other as a team.

Did you not see the match v Arsenal, or Porto or Carlisle away in 1978 ?

Even the greats crumble when they stop playing as a team.

From a fan's perspective the simplest equation is to decide...

if your are a Jedi Wrexham Fan or a Darkside Wrexham fan, seduced by the power of the dark side.

:45:

A Wrexham fan from the darkside will say...

'We have en endemic problem playing at home in front of large crowds.'

That's dark terminology.

A Jedi Wrexham fan would look at the dark side and work out how they can use that force to bring them over to the light.

Re: Champions

Invite all the players from 77/78 Champions side back to the Racecourse. Include all the substitutes.

Give them their old adidas kit with their own number on the back. (They might need a larger size :))

For the wonderful players who are sadly not longer here with us. Get someone else to wear their shirt and number to represent them in spirit.

And get them to all walk out before the start of a match. Have our current lads make a tunnel and clap them onto the pitch. Let the away fans see what our club is about.

You need to earn respect of those who have done it, to succeed in life.

Take the players to the Wrexham Town Hall. Show them the balcony where the trophy will be paraded by the Wrexham Mayor and let them see the park that will be full of Wrexham fans.

Make them believe. Show them the light.

This thing about 'large crowd syndrome' is a load of twaddle.

In the 30 years I have been supporting Wrexham they have won lots of games in front of large crowds. Just as they have lost lots of games in front of three men and their dogs!

Not strictly true.
Large crowd syndrome is another way of saying Increased expectation and the pressure that brings. However as El poncho says, we need to turn that nervousness into the confidence of playing in front of large crowds over the season and use it to our advantage. Currently our opposition at home are the underdogs and tend to raise their game, our crowd can be fairly quiet unless we are scoring and the support needs to be more vociferous and intimidating for the opponents.
Our away support is often more raucous than that at home and we appear as a team to be under less pressure.
